Paper and Book Chapter Published Paper on PAFUSion in the journal 'Photoacoustics' and a Review chapter in the book “Frontiers in biophotonics for translational medicine" have been published. 
Paper on wave correlations published in Nature Physics In collaboration with the California Institute of Technology and the Exzellenzcluster NeuroCure Charité Berlin, we discovered an new type of wave correlations inside biological tissue. We expect that this effect can be used to image objects hidden deep inside tissue.

Welcome to Sjoukje as Mederwerker Onderzoek - I year PhD student Sjoukje Schoustra has been appointed as Medewerker Onderzoek since 15 June 2015, on the Photoacoustic Mammography (PAMmography) project. 
Congratulations Dr. Altaf Hussain On 20th of May 2015, Altaf Hussain successfully defended his PhD thesis entitled:“Towards optical absorption imaging by combining photoacoustic and ultrasound modulated optical tomography” 
Pioneers in Health Care Innovation Fund vouchers for Nienke Bosschaart and Srirang Manohar Two of the 8 vouchers of the joint innovation fund from the UT-MIRA, ZGT and MST, have been granted to BMPI. 
New Member : Veni Laureate Nienke Bosschaart Nienke Bosschaart has started as a Veni laureate at BMPI. Her Veni project is titled: Blood analysis without pain in neonates. In this project, a noninvasive alternative will be developed for invasive blood sampling in preterm babies. Nienke will employ the technique low-coherence spectroscopy (LCS): a new spectroscopic modality that she developed during her PhD. 
BMPI welcomes Redmar Redmar Vlieg is a Biomedical Engineering master student. In coming months, Redmar will work on the new setup for photoacoustic tomography of finger joints. 
BMPI welcomes two new members December 1st 2014: BMPI welcomes two new members. Last month, two new students joined BMPI for their Master assignments.
Gerwin Osnabrugge [Left] is a Biomedical Engineering master student. In coming months, Gerwin will investigate the anisotropic memory effect, which describes the similarity between different interference patterns created by light propagating through a scattering medium. Peter van Es won the "Best Poster" award December 1st 2014: Peter van Es has won a Poster award at the MIRA day on the 27th of November. During the event, which took place at the Hatrans Lounge of the Grolsch Veste stadium, he received a price of 250 euro. 
NEW PUBLICATIONS Several exciting papers got published in the last few months. 
BMPI welcomes three new members June 6th, 2014 - BMPI welcomes three new members: Colin Veenstra , Sjoukje Schoustra and Ivo van der Lugt .Colin and Sjoukje are Master students and Ivo is a Bachelor student. All are studying Biomedical Engineering at University Of Twente.
In coming months, Colin will investigate about the absorption coefficient measurement using integrating sphere. Sjoukje's research will be focussed on second version of Photoacoustic Mammoscope [PAM2] and initial clinical measurements. Ivo's bachelor assignment is aiming at identifying and reducing motion artefacts in LASCA [ Laser Speckle Contrast Analysis] measurements.

Michelle Heijblom receives doctorate Michelle Heijblom successfully defended her PhD thesis on 23 April 2014 entitled “Clinical experiences with Photoacoustic Breast Imaging: The appearance of suspicious lesions" 
Paper in Nature Communications A collaboration between BMPI, POF, Philips and EMC has resulted in a paper in the prestigious journal Nature Communications. 
Srirang Manohar wins Decentrale onderwijsprjis - BMT Srirang Manohar was selected as the best teacher in the study Biomedical Technology for 2013. 
New papers published Several papers on exciting work in the BMPI have been published. 
BMPI welcomes master students Guus and Berkan! December 10th, 2012 - BMPI welcomes two new master students: Guus van Raaphorst and Berkan Basel. Both are students Biomedical Engineering at the University of Twente. Their assignment in BMPI is the last hurdle before obtaining their degree of MSc. Although they will work in the same group, the assignments of the two students are completely different.

Welcome Rieks Hekman en Martin Buitink October 1st, 2013 – Last week two new students joined the BMPI! Martin Buitink and Rieks Hekman are fourth year applied physics students and they have just started their Bachelor project about the influence of dynamic tissue phantoms on the decorrelation time of laser speckle, under supervision of dr. Ivo Vellekoop. 
Welcome Sofia Sevastidou September 18th, 2013 – A new student joined the BMPI! Sofia Sevastidou is originally from Greece (Thessaloniki) and she is doing her master in Nanotechnology at the University of Twente. 
Congratulations to Maura, Marieke, Wouter en Gerda! July 23rd, 2013 – In the last month, four bachelor students successfully finished their projects in BMPI! Maura Dantuma, Marieke Olsman, Wouter van Dijk and Gerda Dedden joined BMPI in April 2013 to finish their bachelor Biomedical Engingeering with a 3-month research project. 
Welcome to Sri Nivas Chandrasekaran July 12th, 2013 – Last month Sri Nivas Chandrasekaran joined BMPI for a 3 month internship. Being a master student in Applied Physics at Cornell University, Ithaca (NY, United States), Sri Nivas will spend his summer in BMPI to work in the field of focusing light through scattering media. 
Michelle Heijblom awarded presentation prize at the European Conference on Biomedical Optics (ECBO) May 17th, 2013 - Michelle Heijblom, has won the 1st prize in the Best Student Oral Presentation competition of the biannual conference European Conferences on Biomedical Optics (ECBO) held at Messe Munchen, Munich, between 12 - 16 May 2013. This is one of the most important conferences on Biomedical Optics. 
Dr. Diederik and Gerrit, MSc May 17th, 2013- BMPI congratulates Diederik Grootendorst and Gerrit Held with obtaining the degree of PhD and MSc respectively.
On the 17th of April 2013, Diederik Grootendorst successfully defended his PhD thesis entitled: ‘“Detection of lymph node metastases by photoacoustic imaging and on the 24th of April 2013, Gerrit Held (BME) defended his master thesis regarding the characterization of a handheld photoacoustic image. 
Michelle Heijblom speaker at prestigious TEDx event in Geneva May 17th, 2013 - Michelle Heijblom was invited to Geneva, to share her ideas and experiences of breast imaging using Photoacoustics, at a prestigious TEDx event organized by Procter and Gamble (P&G). The event was held in the P&G center on the 13th of March 2013, with the theme ‘The Power of Trust’. Michelle spoke of the unreliability and uncertainty associated with breast cancer diagnosis using imaging, but also the emotions suffered by patients who are confronted with the disease. 
Four new bachelor students BMT in BMPI April 26th, 2013 - Four new bachelor students joined BMPI on the 22nd of April. In the coming 10 weeks the students will work on an individual research project to obtain their bachelor degree. 
BMPI welcomes Matthea van Dijk for her master's assignment April 26th, 2013 – Last month Matthea van Dijk joined BMPI. Matthea is a master student biomedical engineering following the Human Function Technology – Biomedical physics track and she just started her graduation project in BMPI. 
Srirang Manohar wins education prize 2012 biomedical technology January 10th 2013- BMPI congratulates Srirang Manohar with winning the TNW Education prize for 2012 in the Biomedical Technology Education stream. The prize is given to teachers who stand out for their contribution to excellent education. 
Welcome to Paul Hamelmann January 23rd, 2013 - BMPI welcomes a new master student: Paul Hamelmann.
Paul is a Biomedical Engineering student and his project in BMPI will be the last part of his master track in clinical physics.
Paul will investigate the 3D printing of a phantom that can be used to mimic the skin for measurements with the TOPcam or LSCI, two methods that are available in BMPI. 
Batsheba did not have breast cancer after all January 10th 2013 – In December 2012, the paper
“Monte Carlo simulations shed light on Bathsheba’s suspect breast” written by researchers from BMPI was first published online on the website of the Journal of Biophotonics.
The publication of this paper got a lot of national attention. Amongst others Nu.nl, De Volkskrant en Trouw placed the news on their website and both the NRC and Tubantia placed an article about it in the printed weekend edition of the newspaper.

Welcome to master student Hans Ligtenberg December 20th, 2012 - BMPI welcomes a new master student: Hans Ligtenberg.
Hans is a Biomedical Engineering student and his project in BMPI will be the last hurdle before becoming MSc.
In the coming months, Hans will do research on the building of a phase-conjugating mirror and how this can be used in combination with ultrasound imaging. 
BMPI congratulates Sanne, MSc and Stefan, MSc December 7th, 2012 - Last month, two master students from our group graduated! BMPI congratulates Sanne Slegers (BME) and Stefan Sandker (TM) with obtaining the title of Master of Science (MSc). 
Rogier Wildeboer (BSc, BME) wins prize for best bachelor research performed in the Netherlands with his research performed in BMPI November 22nd, 2012 - BMPI congratulates Rogier Wildeboer with his prize for the best bachelor research performed in the Netherlands last year. The student biomedical technology performed his bachelor research in BMPI in the spring of 2012. He investigated the use of higher harmonics to improve the image quality of photoacoustic images.
Wednesday November 21st, sixty preselected students had to present their bachelor research at the Student Research Conference in Utrecht. Rogier won the first prize: 1500 euro. 
IVO VELLEKOOP STARTS TENURE TRACK AT BMPI September 1st, 2012 - Ivo Vellekoop has started as an assistant professor in BMPI. Ivo received his masters and PhD degrees in the Complex Photonic Systems group of the University of Twente and worked as a postdoc at the Physical Systems Biology group of the University of Zurich, and at the Biophotonics Laboratory of the California Institute of Technology. 
Paper on the potential of superparamagnetic iron nanoparticles (SPIOs) as photoacoustic contrast agents October 31st 2012 - In the first volume of 2013, the paper of Diederik Grootendorst et al:
“Evaluation of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (Endorem®) as a photoacoustic contrast agent for intra-operative nodal staging”
Will be published in Contrast Media & Molecular Imaging (Vol. 8, (1), pp. 83, January/February 2013 doi: 10.1002/cmmi.1498)
The work summarized in this paper was performed by researchers from BMPI in strong collaboration with researchers from various other groups within MIRA (NeuroImaging, Biomedical Chemistry, Nanobiophysics) and the Netherlands Cancer Institute Antoni van Leeuwenhoek (NKI-AVL). 
Stefan Sandker awarded 2nd poster prize October 8th, 2012 - Stefan Sandker (master student Technical Medicine) won the 2nd prize with his poster on the ‘science symposium 2012’ (wetenschapssymposium 2012) of the Medisch Spectrum Twente hospital in Enschede. 
BMPI welcomes two new members October 1st 2012 - Gerrit Held and Pim van den Berg joined BMPI as a master student Biomedical Engineering and PhD student respectively. Both will work on photoacoustic imaging for clinical applications.
BMPI whishes Gerrit and Pim good luck with their project in the group. 
'European Hospital' pays attention to photoacoustic imaging September 24th 2012 - One of the techniques under investigation in BMPI is photoacoustic imaging for various medical applications. Professor Wiendelt Steenbergen recently outlined the highly promising potentials of this technology in medical research during an interview with ‘European Hospital’

Paper on photoacoustic imaging of human lymph nodes published in Lasers in Surgery and Medicine August 15th 2012 - On the 6th of August, the paper entitled:
“First experiences of photoacoustic imaging for detection of melanoma metastases in resected human lymph nodes”
Was first published online in Lasers in Surgery and Medicine (Lasers in Surgery and Medicine, vol.44, issue 6, 2012, DOI 10.1002/lsm.22058)
The work summarized in this paper was performed by researchers from BMPI (Diederik Grootendorst, Jithin Jose, Ton van Leeuwen, Wiendelt Steenbergen and Srirang Manohar) in strong collaboration with the Netherlands Cancer Institute Antoni van Leeuwenhoek (NKI-AVL) and the nanobiophysics group of the University of Twente. 
First MIRA Imaging and Diagnostics colloquium: June 19th, 12.30, NH 1.24 The Imaging and Diagnostics colloquium is a new initiative within MIRA. This will be a series of presentations given mainly by PhD students, postdocs and other researchers within the Imaging and Diagnostics track of MIRA. The purpose of the colloquium is to bring together researchers working on Imaging and Diagnostics, so that they know about each other’s work and find it easier to get in touch for help and cooperation. 
Samir Kumar Biswas joined BMPI BMPI welcomes a new postdoctoral researcher: Samir Kumar Biswas. Samir will be involved in the Indo-Dutch project on photoacoustic imaging of finger joints for diagnosis and disease monitoring of rheumatoid arthritis. 
Paper and press-release on photoacoustic mammography On May 7th 2012, the research paper entitled:
“Visualizing breast cancer using the Twente photoacoustic mammoscope: What do we learn from twelve new patient measurements?”
Written by researchers from BMPI and the Medisch Spectrum Twente Hospital, was published in Optics Express.
Together with the online publication of the manuscript, OSA distributed a press release concerning the work. 
BMPI welcomes six new bachelor students Six new bachelor students (Biomedical Technology and Advanced Technology) joined BMPI on the 23rd of April. In the coming 10 weeks, the students will work on an individual research project to obtain their bachelor degree. 
Review on acousto-optics published In April 2012, the review entitled:
“State-of-the art of acousto-optic sensing and imaging of turbid media”
Written by Steffen Resink and Wiendelt Steenbergen from BMPI and Claude Boccara from the Langevin Institute (ESPCI ParisTech), was published in the Journal of Biomedical Optics 
BMPI congratulates dr. Jithin Jose!! On Thursday the 5th of April 2012, BMPI member Jithin Jose successfully defended his PhD thesis entitled:
“Prospects of passive element enriched photoacoustic computed tomography (PER-PACT)"
After which he obtained the degree of doctor. 
Chiel Grijsen graduated! On the 7th of March Chiel Grijsen (BME) succesfully defended his master thesis. His work was graded with an 8. 
A new master student joins BMPI BMPI welcomes a new master student: Mithun Kuniyil Ajith Singh. In the coming months, Mithun will study the preamplifiers for the ultrasound detectors used in photoacoustic imaging. 
New master student in BMPI Sanne Slegers joined BMPI on the first of February. The project with the miniature photoacoustic imager will be the last part of Sanne’s master in Biomedical Engineering. 
PhD Defence Jithin Jose on April 5, 2012 On Thursday the 5th of April, BMPI member Jithin Jose will defend his PhD thesis entitled:
“Prospects of passive element enriched photoacoustic computed tomography (PER-PACT)"
The defence will start with a short introduction at 16.30 hrs in the Prof. Dr. G. Berkhoff-zaal in the Waaier at the University of Twente. 
Michelle Heijblom awarded presentation prize at BIOS 2012 Michelle Heijblom has won the 2nd prize in the Best Paper competition at the BIOS in San Francisco.

BMPI welcomes new master student Peter Schutte (Biomedical Engineering) Another new student joined BMPI! Peter Schutte plans to complete his master in Biomedical Engineering in our group, working on a specific application in the field of in vivo photoacoustic imaging. 
Stefan Sandker (Technical Medicine) joined BMPI Stefan Sandker joined BMPI for his graduation assignment. As a technical medicine student, Stefan will work partly at the department of thoracic surgery of the Medisch Spectrum Twente and partly in the Biomedical Photonic Imaging group. 
BMPI welcomes Niels Langhout In the first week of November, Niels Langhout joined BMPI for his graduation assignment. His work regarding photoacoustic imaging of lymph nodes for detection of melanoma metastases will be the last part of his masters in both Technical Medicine and Medicine. 
Michelle Heijblom wins prize at Dutch Society for Technical Medicine Congress 21 October 2011 - Michelle Heijblom of the Biomedical Photonic Imaging (BMPI) group won the Best Presentation Award at the 2nd Congress of the Dutch Society for Technical Medicine (NVvTG - Nederlandse Vereniging van Technische Geneeskunde). 
4 master graduations at BMPI In the last months, four master students finished their research at BMPI and became Master of Science (MSc). BMPI congratulates Maj Haverkate, Diederik Grootendorst, Ellen Ten Tije en Carla Kloeze and wishes them best luck with their new jobs.

Maarten Heres joined BMPI Maarten Heres has joined the BMPI group for his graduation internship. Maarten is a master student biomedical engineering at the University of Twente 
BMPI welcomes Peter van Es as a PhD Student! On the first of June 2011, Peter van Es has joined BMPI as a PhD Student. In the coming four years, he will be working on photoacoustic imaging of finger joints in the hand as a test for rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis and therapy monitoring. 
Research in Light-nanoparticle interactions published in Nanoletters. Together with collaborators in the NKI (The Netherlands Cancer Institute), we showed that in their interactions with cells and with pulsed NIR light, gold nanorods can lose their attractive optical properties. 
Indo-Dutch project granted A joint proposal from the Biomedical Photonic Imaging (BMPI) Group, and Indian Institute of Science has been granted. The project is on photoacoustic Imaging of finger joints in the hand as a test for rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis and therapy monitoring. 
Guillaume Lajoinie joined BMPI Guillaume Lajoinie has joined the BMPI group for his Masters Internship. He is from Ecole Centrale de Lyon, France where is pursuing a double degree: as Engineer, and as Master in Biomedical Instrumentation and Imaging.

Wiendelt Steenbergen appointed Professor and Chair of Biomedical Photonic Imaging 26 september 2010 - Dr. Ir. Wiendelt Steenbergen has been appointed Professor and Chair of Biomedical Photonic Imaging (BMPI) since 1 June 2010.
He started his career with an MSc degree in aerospace engineering in 1988 at the Delft University of Technology. He obtained a PhD degree at the Eindhoven University of Technology in 1995, specializing in optical measurement and modeling of turbulent flow. 
Best Student Poster Presentation Award 27 april 2010 - Jithin Jose of the Biomedical Photonic Imaging (BMPI) group won the Best Student Poster Presentation Award in the Photoacoustic Imaging and Spectroscopy session at the Biomedical Optics (BIOMED) Topical Meeting held between April 11-14, 2010 in Miami, US. The awards were given to the best student poster presenters in each topical session who demonstrated outstanding research and scientific presentation skills in the Biomedical Optics field. 
BMPI RECEIVES 1.9 M€ FOR PHOTOACOUSTICS RESEARCH 3 februari 2010 - BMPI has secured two grants for in total 1.9 M€. One grant, of 400 k€ is obtained from the Foundation for Fundamental Research of Matter in the Netherlands (FOM, www.fom.nl), in their program ‘New Physical Instruments for Health Care’. The other, of 1.5 M€, is a VICI-grant obtained by Wiendelt Steenbergen. VICI is a program of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research NWO (www.nwo.nl) for personal funding. 
Decentrale onderwijs prijs Srirang Manohar Elk jaar wordt de Decentrale Onderwijs Prijs uitgereikt aan een door de studenten verkozen tot beste docent. Dit jaar is de prijs uitgereikt aan Dhr. De Wilde (TG) en Dhr. Manohar (BMT). 
Jithin Jose awarded presentation prize at 2nd Dutch BioMedical Engineering Conference First year Ph.D. student at the Biophysical Engineering (BPE) Group, Jithin Jose, won 2nd prize for his presentation at the 2nd Dutch BioMedical Engineering Conference (Egmond aan Zee, The Netherlands - January 22-23, 2009).
