At UT, we attach great importance to the well-being of employees. As a manager, you play a crucial role in this. Well-being is a broad concept that encompasses physical, mental, and socio-emotional well-being. On this page, you will find tips, tools and courses to support and promote the well-being of team members.
Why is well-being in your team important?
Scientific research shows that employees who feel good at work perform better, have lower absenteeism rates, and experience more job satisfaction. Studies have found that well-being is positively linked to important outcomes such as:
- Increased engagement: Employees with high levels of well-being feel more connected to the team and often have higher retention rates.
- Higher productivity: Employees who feel good often have more energy and motivation to perform well.
- Reduced absenteeism: Employees with high well-being levels call in sick less frequently.
What is your role as a manager?
As a manager, you play a central role in creating a supportive work environment and you also have an exemplary role. Many aspects influence employee well-being, such as autonomy, connection, and competence. You can actively contribute to employee well-being by creating an environment where these basic needs are met. How can you do that? You will find tips on this page.
- Your role from a Health & Safety law perspective
Under Dutch Health & Safety (Arbo) law, which we have to adhere to as a university, managers have specific duties, responsibilities, and authorities. Click here for the corresponding memo on tasks, responsibilities, and authorities.
It states, among other things:
- The direct manager is responsible for maintaining up-to-date knowledge on all Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) risks within their work area.
- The direct manager is responsible for taking corrective and preventive measures and supervises their implementation.
- Your role from the Leadership Framework
At the University of Twente, we have jointly developed a leadership framework that helps us create a shared vision of leadership. This framework provides us with clarity within UT on the expectations and responsibilities we have, among other thing, in promoting well-being, ensuring a safe environment, and encouraging growth. More information about the Leadership Framework can be found on the page Leadership at UT | Service Portal | University of Twente.
What can you do?
Self
As a manager, you take care of others, but it starts with yourself. Your own well-being is the basis for sustainable and effective leadership.
- Your own well-being
- Practice what you Preach
When you feel good, you are better able to support, guide and inspire your team with energy and attention. After all, a healthy manager is better able to listen empathetically and pick up on signals. You increase your resilience, maintain and overview and can make more conscious choices – even in challenging situation. Moreover, by actively working on your own well-being, you set a good example. You show that it is OK to guard your boundaries, take time for recovery and take health seriously. This way, you contribute to culture in which team members also feel room to take good care of themselves.
