Why study Industrial Design Engineering?

There are many reasons to sign up for the Bachelor’s in Industrial Design Engineering. Read the most important reasons here!

  • A combination of design and technology

We believe technology and design are increasingly intertwined: the more you know about modern technology, the further you can go in designing logical and innovative products. As a leading university of technology, we teach you to think and work like an engineer. With courses and projects that are about engineering, creativity and understanding people, you will be supported in creating your own identity as a designer. This programme helps you to become an academically educated, entrepreneurial designer capable of coming up with surprising solutions. You learn to research how people think and use your findings to create products that are attractive, user-friendly and effective. Thanks to your broad training, you are able to combine mathematics with creativity, and independent work with participating in interdisciplinary teams.

  • Work on assignments from the real world

Studying Industrial Design Engineering in Twente means that you work with current, realistic assignments taken from the real world. We have strong connections with the industry and other societal organisations, such as governments and healthcare organisations. The programme is firmly grounded in professional practice. You work with companies such as Ahrend, Philips, IKEA and Roessingh Rehabilitation Centre. In this programme, you will have projects in which you work with your project team to develop a product prototype to present to one of these stakeholders. Quite a few products made by our students have actually made it to the market!

  • More than just designing products

As an IDE student you will be trained as an entrepreneurial designer (note that UT has been awarded as ‘the most entrepreneurial university in the Netherlands’ several times). Throughout this Bachelor’s, you will not only know how to design a product, service or system, it goes beyond that. With in-depth, scientific insights, you will gain a firm grasp of the entire design process – from ideas to market introduction – along with all the knowledge of technology, design and marketing that you need for this. With your knowledge of fundamental science, you are able to navigate confidently between technical possibilities and market movements.

  • Personal guidance from engaged teachers in a relaxed, informal atmosphere

Like many study programmes at UT, Industrial Design Engineering is a small-scale programme. This means that, as a student, you receive intensive guidance: we want to get to know you and we invest a lot in personal attention. The atmosphere is informal and pleasant, and the distance between professors and students is small. Your input matters. We value your ideas and experiences and want to learn from that. Together with our study association, Daedalus, we are constantly improving our education and organising all sorts of study-related activities, such as study trips to companies, museums and events within and outside the Netherlands.

  • Create your own identity and enjoy our magnificent campus

In addition to thorough professional knowledge and skills, you develop a broad package of personal competences in this programme. Projects have a clear theme and interact with courses that stimulate analytic thinking, engineering, creativity and understanding people. This will help creating the identity of the designer. To help you become the design engineer you want to be, you can make choices in what you want and need to learn. You will work on projects together with other students, but also select adjacent courses. Additionally, you can choose a minor programme that fits your interests, such as going abroad or choosing of the many options to deepen or broaden your interests and skills. During your time studying Industrial Design Engineering, you have an unforgettable student experience thanks to our wonderful, green campus and the vibrant student city of Enschede, a city full of knowledge, innovation and fun!
