- Ancillary activities (nevenwerkzaamheden)It regularly happens that a University of Twente employee carries out ancillary activities The University of Twente supports this. Ancillary activities can contribute to employees’ professional development, and strengthen the ties between the University and local businesses and organizations. Moreover, the University of Twente aims to boost and promote business activity in the region and ancillary activities are an excellent way of contributing to this goal. What are ancillary activities? The definition of ancillary activities used by the University of Twente is all paid and unpaid work that you perform that is not part of your job at the University. Examples include an employment contract with another employer, supervisory board membership or an advisory role for an external organization, activities for start-ups or as an entrepreneur or other type of independent professional. Non-business ancillary activities that in no way affect the University of Twente’s interests, do not need to be reported. Examples include
- Business travelTravel for and during work When you are required to travel in or outside the Netherlands because of your position, this qualifies as a business trip. Commuter traffic, travel on campus and travel between campus and the ITC building are not considered business trips by the UT. Temporary employment elsewhere in the Netherlands or abroad does not qualify as a business trip. - Commuting travel, temporary accommodation and relocationUT employees may be eligible for allowances to help pay for moving costs, temporary accommodation and daily travel to and from work. You must, however, meet certain conditions. For UT employees these conditions are set out in the Regulations for relocation, temporary accommodation, and commuting allowances (pdf). Submit requests via MyHR links to http://myhr.utwente.nl/ Commuting expenses As a UT employee, you receive an allowance for the costs of your commute to and from work. There are two options: Public transport: 100% reimbursement, second class, or: Fixed travel allowance based on €0.10 per kilometre. Public transport If you travel by public transport then you use your second class, NS Business Card, for your commute. If your commute involves travel from outside the Netherlands, for example from just across the border with Germany, then you can declare your second class/economy class public transport tickets via MyHR. - Confidential adviser, complaints and disputesYou have the right to work in a place where integrity and safety are paramount. Confidential advisor You can talk to a confidential advisor for advice and support whenever you have to deal with unacceptable behaviour, like intimidation, (sexual) harassment, aggression, violence, discrimination, bullying or stalking, or when faced with a conflict in your work situation connected to such behaviour. Read more about confidential advisors The Executive Board has appointed four members of staff to act in the capacity of confidential advisor. These four employees perform their duties as confidential advisor in addition to their regular job. The confidential advisor advises and supports individual staff members who are confronted with unacceptable behaviour like intimidation, (sexual) harassment, aggression, violence, discrimination, bullying or stalking. UT staff can also approach the confidential advisor in case of a workplace conflict related to or arising from unacceptable behaviour. PhD candidates, too, may call
- End of employmentIf your work will soon cease, there are several things which you have to arrange for. What you will need to arrange depends on the reasons for and the situation following your dismissal. It may be that you hand in your notice yourself in order to start working for a different employer or to start your own company. Another possibility could be that your temporary employment contract with the UT is ending, but you have not yet found a new job. Stopping / handing in UT provisions If you are still in possession of UT property, you are required to hand these in on your last working day. Examples include your staff ID card, NS Business Card, telephone, laptop and tablet. If you are part of the administrative and support staff, LISA will cancel your ICT account thirty days after your last working day. Academic staff are given a period of one year before their account is cancelled. Collective insurance As soon as your employment contract with the UT terminates, it will no longer be possible for you to participate in group
- InsurancesThe UT has taken out a number of group insurances for all employees Healthcare insurance (Menzis) The University of Twente has concluded a collective health insurance with Menzis for its (retired) staff members and their families. By doing so, the University believes it can offer you a good quality and affordable health insurance. As participant in the collective health insurance, you will receive a collectivity discount of 15% per month on the premium of the supplementary and dental insurances. As an UT employee, you will also receive 3 extra physiotherapy treatments from the employer's benefit if you have supplementary insurance. The discount on the supplementary insurances and the 3 extra physiotherapy treatments for UT employees also applies to the combination package JongerenVerzorgd. This is an additional insurance and a dental insurance all in one for young people between the ages of 18 and 30. - Leave types & leave regulationsOverview of leave types, regulations and request procedure. The accrual and taking up of regular (holiday) leave has been laid down in the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities (CAO-NU). In addition, the collective labour agreement contains provisions on public holiday leave and on a few special forms of leave that have their basis in the Work and Care Act. This concerns, for example, maternity leave, adoption leave, parental leave, personal leave and emergency leave. Leave request Registration of leave is a self service in myHR/AFAS. - Pension accrual at ABPAs a member of staff of the UT you are obliged to accrue a pension with the ABP (Algemeen Burgerlijk Pensioenfonds) pension fund. This is the pension fund for the government and education sectors. The ABP pension plan comprises three group pensions: ABP KeuzePensioen (old age pension), ABP Nabestaandenpensioen (surviving dependants' pension) and ABP Arbeidsongeschiktheidspensioen (occupational disability pension). - Scope of employment, working hours and daysWorking hours and days The amount of weekly hours you are formally employed with the UT has been established in your employment contract. We call this the formal working hours. The formal working hours for full-time employment are 38 hours a week. The days and times that you will be working are agreed upon with your manager. These agreements are recorded in myHR/AFAS under 'Change Timetable / working pattern'. The working hours recorded in this application, form the basis for the various digital registration systems, such as leave registration, absence registration and time registration. In order for these systems to work correctly, it is paramount that the data recorded in myHR/AFAS be current. Length of work week In the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities, the formal working hours for full-time employment have been set at 38 hours a week. However, at UT the standard working week is 40 hours: 5 days of 8 hours. Because of this, you will work 2 extra hours every week. You will be compensated for
- Social security for cross border workingworking from a border region When you work from home in a border region this might have consequenses for your social security. It is important that you know all the information before you decide to work from home. On 25 May 2022 there have been two information meetings about the social security if you are working from Germany. This information can be found on this page. Social security The basic rule for social insurance is that it is assigned to one state. Contributions are only payable in one state for the total salary. Benefits are accordingly only granted by this one state. The decisive factor for the allocation of the applicable social security law is basically the question in which state you physically carry out your activity. If you carry out your activity exclusively in one state, its social security law is applicable. On 14 June 2022 the Secretary of State has agreed to extend the temporary measure, because of Covid until 1 January 2023. You remain social insured in the Netherlands until 1 January 2023
