    • This website is aimed towards current UT Mechanical Engineering students already enrolled in the programme. If you are a prospective bachelor student, please visit our website for prospective students in English (for the Dutch version see this page). If you are looking for the Master programme Mechanical Engineering, please visit our website for prospective master students.

    • We do not look into this until you have actually started studying Mechanical Engineering at the University of Twente. Only once you have started here you can apply for any exemptions through the examination board.

Please note: you can never start in the second year and there is a maximum for the number of ECs you can get exempted.

    • Before the start of the academic year, you will be invited to participate in the introduction programme, called the Kick-in. The kick-in programme has two parts:

      1. A general UT introduction to become acquainted with the UT campus and facilities, the Enschede city centre and your fellow students (first week Wednesday to Sunday).
      2. A programme-specific introduction where you will get information about the Mechanical Engineering programme and how to start the first week. You will also meet some teachers and programme staff and your group members for the first project (Monday to Wednesday).

You will receive more information about the exact programme via email from the UT Kick-in committee in collaboration with the study association Isaac Newton. More information can also be found on the Kick-in website.

During the introduction, you will also receive a useful checklist and help from current Mechanical Engineering students to arrange the last things to get started with your studies like registering for courses, checking your ICT account etc.

We strongly advise you to participate in the programme specific part of the Kick-in.

    • Checklist

    • Your 1st point of contact is your mentor (see Osiris – tab supervision who is your mentor). You can contact your mentor with questions about or problems with your study programme and studying in general (as long as no mentor has been assigned yet, urgent questions can be addressed to the study adviser, see study counselling or the FAQ).

Contact your tutor for questions about the project and your teacher for questions about a course.

If you have questions about programme choice, study planning, study problems, study skills and education and examination regulations, see study counselling or FAQ.

    • To find out who your mentor is – See Osiris – tab supervision (this information will be added during the first few weeks of the first year).

    • Instructions are given in the Checklist

    • Try to arrive in time for the Kick-in at the end of August. Important information is shared there about the programme. The academic year officially starts on the first Monday of September. If you cannot be present on the first day, inform the study adviser, module 1 coordinator and module 1 project coordinator. You can only participate in the module 1 project if you are participating online in the first week and physically present on campus the second week.

    • Instructions are given in the Checklist

    • Send one email to the project and module coordinator and the academic skills teacher.

In this email, mention your name and student number.

    • Here you can find a summary about the educational systems for first year students

    • Once you have registered for the Kick-In programme and became a member of the study association W.S.G. Isaac Newton, you can purchase your study books with a discount. You will get more information about this during the programme specific introduction days (Monday to Wednesday). The books will be delivered to your home address.

For the course Technical Product Definition you need the reader:  Technical Product Definition: Assignments (#022). You need this from day one. You can buy it during the introduction period in Building Bastille, at the Union shop (pay cash or pin). You can find the opening hours here.

    • For the study programme Mechanical Engineering you need a notebook with high graphic performance and a powerful processor in the first week of your study. You can bring your own device or purchase a new high-end notebook via the annual notebook project of the Notebook Service Centre (NSC) of the University of Twente.

We advise you to buy a laptop via NSC. They offer selected notebooks for a competitive price and suitable for your studies. For Mechanical Engineering you need the mobile workstation (not the ultrabook). The notebook can be delivered to your home address. NSC also provides advice and support for notebook-related issues to UT students. When you order a notebook through NSC, you will benefit from exclusive services!

If you have your own laptop be sure the software required for the Mechanical Engineering programme runs on it. You need Solidworks, this software requires a high graphic performance and a powerful processor. Check if your laptop is suitable. It is not adviced to use a MacBook e.g. as the Solidworks software does not work on it properly.

    • You can find your timetable via www.utwente.nl/en/educational-systems/about-the-applications/timeedit/ two weeks before the start of the academic year.

    • See below the FAQ about  Academic Planning .

    • See the Canvas page Info Mechanical Engineering What to do in case of stopping or switching?

    • For information about your options, contact the study adviser of the programme you want to switch to.

    • Contact the transfer coordinator for ME mr. L.G. Lemmers (email: l.g.lemmers@saxion.nl). Please also include your phone number!

Note: An English track of Mechanical Engineering starts in September 2024.

    • Contact the University of Applied Sciences and ask what they need for the transfer.

    • Mechanical Engineering is a three year bachelor programme. Each year consists of four modules, each with their own theme within the programme. During the first semester of the third year, you as a student have the opportunity to follow a minor of your own choice. Page with the curriculum of the BSc Mechanical Engineering programme.

    • An internship is not part of the Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering. Internships are part of the master’s programme.

During the bachelor a few minors offer an internship, such as "Crossing borders" and the Dutch minor "Learning how to teach".

We will launch a new minor "Internship Mechanical Engineering for ME-UT + ME-VU". For more information you can contact Mark Rijkeboer or Marike Rupert.

    • You can do an Honours programme as an extra-curricular broadening programme. Also committees, boards, student teams like Green Team and Solar Team are examples of extra-curricular activities.

    • Please have a look at this website.

    • Please contact the lecturer.

    • We recommend you attend all scheduled contact hours. It is easy to fall behind if you miss lectures and tutorials. Try to plan other appointments and holidays around your class schedule. Most lectures do not have mandatory attendance, most practicals and workshops do, but check the information on Canvas for each course. If a session (lecture, practical, workshop, tutorial) has mandatory attendance and you cannot attend, send the lecturer an email in advance. Some lectures may have alternative options or require a compensatory assignment. For project-related sessions, inform your project group as well.

    • Contact your tutor or the project coordinator for questions about the project.

    • Contact the teacher of the course.

    • You always have two opportunities for every course each year: the scheduled regular exam and the scheduled resit as an extra opportunity.

When you miss a scheduled exam opportunity due to reasons beyond anyone’s control and you fail the resit, your next opportunity will be during the following academic year. It is our policy that no extra exams or resits will be arranged. Also if you miss both exams no extra exams will be arranged.

    • With this tool you can create your own overview, especially usefull when you have courses left to do from previous years.

    • Always report circumstances to the study adviser (once they occur).

This guide provides an overview of both internal (UT) and external guidance and support options. We offer tips to reduce limiting factors, offer appropriate aids, collaborate with you to find solutions, and offer perspectives on studying with your personal circumstances. Always discuss your support needs with your study adviser to ensure successful studies at UT.

    • The project exams are usually the last week of the quarter, with some exceptions: module 1 project exams are in the first week of module 2 and module 2 project exams are on the first two days of module 3. You will often see multiple days blocked for exams in the timetable. Your project group will have their exam on one of those days. The detailed schedule per project group is usually shared by the project coordinator via Canvas in the first few weeks of the project. If you have other obligations during the exam period, e.g. a retake from a previous year, inform the project coordinator as soon as possible, preferably a few weeks before the start of the project. Sometimes they can try to take availability into account.

    • Information about the resit weeks can be found on the page Academic Planning | Resits Mechanical Engineering

    • All holidays and collective closing days are listed in the BSc Mechanical Engineering academic calendar

    • In case you have to redo tests or exams of earlier years, you have to register in Osiris yourself using the current course codes mentioned in the Programme Bachelor Mechanical Engineering overview (see page with the curriculum of the BSc Mechanical Engineering programme).

Please note: as of 2023-2024 some course codes have changed. The study units consisting of 2 courses are split up into individual study units, having their own (new) course code. Due to this change, it might not be possible to register for some M1/M2/M3/M4 subjects via Osiris.

If the course is not in your exam programme (so you cannot click directly), use the option ''Or make a direct registration based on course code''.  The course will show outside your ME exam programme. This is OK (see next FAQ).

Make sure to register for the course code and for the module code, otherwise you won't get access to the module/course page on Canvas.

If you cannot register for your course in Osiris, you can send an e-mail to the Educational Affairs Office (BOZ) via boz-me@utwente.nl requesting to be registered for a specific study unit code. Include the following information:

      • Name and student number
      • Course name & course code
      • Module name & module code (providing access to canvas)
    • The course needs to be moved to your exam programme AFTER you have passed the course and the grade is registered in Osiris.

You can use this form Mechanical Engineering (BSc) | Forms for requests | Request for correction registration errors in Osiris (form)

    • Once the module has started, enrolment is only possible via the Educational Affairs Office (BOZ). You can send an e-mail to boz-me@utwente.nl requesting to be registered for study unit code(s) as well as the module code.

      Include the following information:

      • Name and student number
      • Course name & course code
      • Module name & module code (providing access to canvas)

Module and course codes can be found in the bachelor curriculum

    • You can send an e-mail to the Educational Affairs Office (BOZ) via boz-me@utwente.nl requesting to be registered for a specific study unit code.

      Include the following information:

      • Name and student number
      • Course name & course code
      • Module name & module code (providing access to canvas)

Module and course codes can be found in the bachelor curriculum

    • The course code has changed for Machine Elements in 2033 - 2024 and that is the reason why it does not work for students started before 2023. You should use the new number (202300282) or, if that does not work either, you can ask our back-office to register the course for you (see for contact details previous Q&A).

Note: The credits for the course changed from 4 to 3EC, however you will get 4EC for the course if you got 3.5EC for the project of M4. It can be that the new course(code) will be placed outside your exam programme in Osiris. Once the grade is registered and sufficient, you need to fill out the online form to replace the grade into your exam programme (#course registration). This implies that the grade will be added to the original course code (thus 4EC).

    • You can report the errors via the form on the page Forms for requests | request for correction registration errors in Osiris (form).

    • Contact Student Services at studentservices@utwente.nl

    • You can use this form Mechanical Engineering (BSc) |Forms for requests | Request for correction registration errors in Osiris (form) when a grade is registered under the (new) code for the separate course and should be to moved the (old) module / course code in the exam programme or a minor course is registered outside the study programme and should be moved to the minor inside your study  programme.

    • First look at the bottom of your study progress overview in Osiris under other subjects. If your grade is registered there, you can correct this and have it put into your study programme using the form on the page Forms for requests | request for correction registration errors in Osiris (form).

If you did a course and got a grade, e.g. on Canvas, but it is not registered in Osiris yet, you should ask the teacher to register the grade in Osiris

    • The weighted average in Osiris is based on the ECs. This implies that the result of a 5EC course weighs more than a 1EC course. The weighted average only applies to numerical results. Other results, such as Pass/Exemption/credits for 5.0-5.4 (C5), do NOT count for the weighted average. Courses in the minor graded by a numerical result are taken into account.

For the calculation of the weighted average you multiply the result with the ECs. You do this for all relevant grades (related to a course code) and the total is divided by the total number of ECs.

Please note: the weighted average is different from the GPA. There are different methods to calculate the GPA. If you need your GPA ask the institute how they calculate it.

Note: for the calculation of your average for cum laude we do not use a weighted average, we sum the rounded grades of the study units and divide by the number of study units that have a rounded grade (projects, courses without a numerical result and minor courses, even if they have a numerical result are excluded in the average for cum laude).

    • No, your grades remain valid undefinitely.
This notification in Osiris is made by the supplier of Osiris (on the request of some other universities). Unfortunately, we cannot change and delete this notification in Osiris.

    • No, as a bachelor student you are automatically registered for both exam opportunities when enrolled for the course in Osiris.

    • Information about the resit weeks can be found on the page Academic Planning | Resits Mechanical Engineering.

    • You can take both exams in succession with a short break in between (so called double exam). You need to follow the procedure described on the page Rules & Procedures | Double Exam. Please note there is a deadline!

    • It is important to inform your project coordinator of the resit date(s) to avoid double scheduling of the oral project exam and the resit(s)! Please do this at the start of the module.

A so-called double exam is only possible for two written exams, not for an oral and a written exam.

    • This is only useful in case of unreasonable study delay (> 1 semester) or weighty circumstances (e.g. last course of the BSc programme).

Please note that proof of your personal circumstances is required if relevant.

See Examination Board – How to Approach the Board

    • If you fail part of a Study Unit, you only need to redo the insufficient part provided results are registered in Osiris.

Note: Results of partial exams/assignments that are not registered in Osiris do not remain valid and have to be redone in the next academic year.

      • If you fail one part of the project, you need to redo the whole project next year
      • If you need to redo the project, you also need to redo academic skills
      • If you pass the project and fail academic skills, you need to redo both
      • If you fail academic skills, you need to redo academic skills next year
      • If you need to redo academic skills, you also need to redo the project
      • If you pass academic skills and fail the project, you need to redo both
    • A student is allowed to have a registered grade of 5.0 - 5.4 for one study unit or part of a study unit, not being a project, in the first year (B1).

In addition, a student is allowed to have a registered grade of 5.0 - 5.4 for one study unit or part of a study unit, not being a project, in the second year (B2) or for UT ME study units ‘Statistics’ or ‘Introduction to Finite Element Method’ of the third year (M11).

You can request for the Year 1 C5 registration if all other study units of the B1 have been completed (passed).

The Year 2 C5 registration can be requested for if all other study units of the B2/M11 have been completed (passed).

Request can be done via the form at Forms for requests | Request for C5 registration in Osiris (form)

Note: a grade lower than 5.0 which is rounded to a 5.0 in Osiris (e.g. unrounded 4.8) cannot be registered as a C5. The unrounded grade needs to be 5.0, 5.1, 5.2, 5.3 or 5.4.

Note: If students do not register a 5.0 – 5.4 in the first year they cannot register two 5.0 - 5.4's in the second/third year.

    • A grade lower than 5.0 which is rounded to a 5.0 in Osiris (e.g. unrounded 4.8) cannot be registered as a C5. The unrounded grade needs to be 5.0, 5.1, 5.2, 5.3 or 5.4. A course with a grade lower than 5.0 should be redone.

    • No, this is not possible.

A student is allowed to have a registered grade of 5.0 - 5.4 for one study unit or part of a study unit, not being a project, in the first year.

In addition, a student is allowed to have a grade of 5.0 - 5.4 for one study unit or part of a study unit, not being a project, in the second year or for UT ME study units ‘Statistics’ or ‘Introduction to Finite Element Method’ of the third year.

It is not possible to register two 5.0 - 5.4's in the second/third year if no 5.0 - 5.4 is registered in the first year (or two 5.0 - 5.4's in the first year and no 5.0 - 5.4 in the second/third year).

    • You can request for registration when all other study units are completed (passed). Request can be done via the form at Forms for requests | Request for C5 registration in Osiris (form)

    • No, registration takes place on your request after all other study units are completed (passed).

    • We do this because other study units with a grade of 5.0 - 5.4 may be(come) more suitable to qualify for registration as C5 and it is our policy that C5 registration cannot be changed.

    • Only if all other study units are completed, you can fill in the request form C5 registration in Osiris, see Forms for requests | Request for C5 registration in Osiris (form)

    • No, once the credits for the grade 5.0 - 5.4 are registered in Osiris, visible as C5, you do not need to resit the subject next year. It is even not possibele to resit the subject.

    • See Rules & Regulations | BSA | Mechanical Engineering (BSc) | Information for current students (utwente.nl)

    • See Rules & Regulations | BSA | Mechanical Engineering (BSc) | Information for current students (utwente.nl) under BSA standard for Mechanical Engineering programme

    • At the end of your first year, you will receive a (binding) recommendation to continue your studies (BSA). A negative BSA means you cannot re-enrol in that same programme for the next three years. If this is your first year and you are unsure about continuing, here are your options:

      1. De-enrolment before 1 February 2025
      2. De-enrolment between 1 February 2025 and 1 March 2025
      3. No de-enrolment before 1 March 2025

For detailed information about the three options see the website of SGW.

    • See Rules & Regulations | BSA | Mechanical Engineering (BSc) | Information for current students (utwente.nl) under Personal Circumstances

    • See FAQ BSA (utwente.nl)

    • Yes. The (highest) credits of the grade between 5.0 and 5.4 will automatically count for your (extended) BSA. Registration of the credits as C5 is not required, we count these credits manually. This gives you some flexibility for the upcoming year. You keep the opportunity for redoing the course next year or have the credits registered for this course or any other C5 candidate that you have or might pop up along the way.

    • Yes, UT students can transfer to another bachelor’s programme at UT up to and including August 31, even after the regular application period has closed.

      Advice:

      • Contact the programme you want to transfer to:
        • Ask about transfer options
        • Check if matching or numerus fixus applies
        • Find out about exemptions for overlapping courses

    • Committing fraud is an act of deceiving (the teacher/organization).
Scientific integrity is one of the key values for academic professionals and students. Violation of this scientific integrity (scientific misconduct) detracts from the contribution of science to society. As a member of the scientific community, students have to embrace and respect these important values. Scientific misconduct includes actions or negligence that detracts from the scientific integrity of the university, but also of the individual student and teacher.
A test or exam is intended to assess the knowledge, insight or skills of students (Article 7.10 WHW).
A fraud incident is reported by the teacher to the Examination Board by mail. In the mail he/she states the course, the date and time of the incident, the accuse and the student(s) involved.
Furthermore, the teacher explains his/her perception of the situation. Evidence to be included (not exhaustive list) are the exam, the student’s work, non-accused student work as a “normal” example; all preferably having the pdf format.
The student will be informed about the possible fraud/plagiarism case by either the teacher of the course or the Examination Board.

There should be an overlap in learning outcomes and content. You can submit a request by filling out the form Request Examination Board ME-SET, see Examination Board ME-SET | Request on the website.
