Bas van de Kerkhof
Bas earned his Bachelor’s in Mathematics at the University of Twente and is now a first-year Master’s student in the Applied Mathematics programme. He was eager to continue pursuing mathematics as an academic discipline and decided on the specialization in Mathematics and Applications of Signals and Systems (MASS). This programme provides a broad perspective on mathematical topics in Signals and Systems Theory.
During his Bachelor’s programme, Bas became interested in a range of mathematical topics. He soon began to focus on subjects in the field of Signals and Systems, and he decided to make this field his Master’s specialization. ‘In the Master’s course on Robust Control, I learned how to build a controller for specific types of systems – for example for cruise controllers or automatic thermostats,’ Bas explains. ‘Signals for some systems, like mobile phones, are sent through the air. Transmission has to be as interference-free as possible. This means you have to devise smart systems that minimize noise.’ Bas enjoys these kinds of challenges, which involve getting the signal & system just right and providing consumers with reliable equipment.
Bas is not yet sure what the future has in store for him once he’s completed his Master’s in Applied Mathematics. He still needs to complete his traineeship and then his final project. During these assignments he will get hands-on experience with various research subjects in the field of MASS. After that he’ll be able to decide on a multitude of career options. ‘But for now I’m intending to enjoy my studies to the fullest,’ Bas beams.
