The Meetup

Current challenges in orthopedic surgery and the role of biomechanics
Knee replacement surgery is a successful intervention that is performed by orthopedic surgeons to relieve the pain and restore the normal function of the knee joint. Despite its high success rate in the clinical setting, there are several intraoperative surgical or patient-dependent factors which can affect the postoperative outcome, and subsequently, lead to implant failure and poor patient satisfaction. Thereon, subject-specific biomechanical models can be used to assist surgeons in developing preoperative plans to optimize surgical outcomes.

The speakers

Anil Peters
Orthopedic surgeon at OCON

Anil Peters is an orthopedic surgeon currently working at OCON (Orthopedisch Centrum Oost-Nederland). His field of expertise includes hip replacement surgery, knee arthroplasty and prostheses, sports orthopedics and traumatology. Besides, he contributes to orthopedic research demonstrating several publications on both hip and knee surgery, and participating in either national or international conferences. He is also a member of the Dutch Orthopedic Association, Dutch Association for Arthroscopy, and NVOT (Nederlandse Orthopaedische Vereniging) orthopedic traumatology working group.

Marco Marra
Assistant Professor at University of Twente

Marco Marra obtained his PhD at the Orthopedic Research Laboratory of the Radboud University Medical Center and he is currently an assistant professor at the University of Twente. His research interests include development and testing of patient-specific musculoskeletal models of the active structures of the lower extremity, and particularly personalized musculoskeletal modeling of the knee joint, and total knee arthroplasty. In the course of his research career within the field of orthopedic biomechanics, he counts more than thirty scientific publications on lower limb musculoskeletal modeling and knee surgery.
