Mini-symposium: “An in-to-body experience” CREATING SOCIAL (ROBOT) BEHAVIOUR

Thursday, September 27, 2018 | 14:00-15:45
DesignLab, room ‘Inform’, University of Twente

It is our pleasure to invite you to join our mini-symposium “An in-to-body experience”, on creating social (robot) behaviour. The mini-symposium will be held September 27th 14:00-15:45 in DesignLab of the University of Twente, prior to Jered Vroon’s defense on responsive social positioning behaviour for semi-autonomous telepresence robots (16:30-18:00).

There still is a lot we do not know about creating social (robot) behaviour. What do we need to create truly social behaviour? If we are creating artificial behaviour, how can we know which behaviours are ‘good’, ‘trustworthy’, ‘social’, or ‘appropriate’? How can we effectively imbue an artificial agent with this knowledge? How can we handle the practical and technical limitations involved?

To address these questions, in this mini-symposium, we will focus on one specific angle; the role of ‘being embodied’. What are the opportunities and challenges of approaching the creation of social (robot) behaviour as an in-to-body experience?

PROGRAMME

14:00 - 14:10

Brief introductions

14:10 - 15:20

Short presentations from a rich set of perspectives;

Prof.dr. Tibor Bosse              AI & Communication Sciences, Radboud University

Dr. Birna van Riemsdijk        Socially Adaptive Computing, Technical University Delft

Prof.dr. Dirk Heylen             Socially Intelligent Computing, University of Twente

Dr. Pim Haselager                Theoretical Cognitive Science, Radboud University

15:20 - 15:45

Open discussion on the theme

If you are interested in these different perspectives on creating social (robot) behaviour, and/or would like to contribute your own, you are very welcome to join! Please also feel free to forward this invitation to others who might be interested.

We are very much looking forward to discuss this fascinating topic. If you are too, we hope to see you at DesignLab upcoming Thursday, 27 September.
