On Wednesday the 12th of October, Martin van den Brink, one of the most praised alumni of the University of Twente, returns to our university to share his version of his success story with us. Chairing this event will be Victor van der Chijs, chair of the board of the University of Twente. There will be the opportunity to ask questions to Martin van den Brink himself and the discussion will continue afterwards while enjoying some drinks. Both the lecture and the drinks are free.
Martin van den Brink is Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and President of ASML, the largest supplier of lithography machines in the world. He has been working at this company from the very beginning, and nowadays he and CEO Peter Wennink are in charge of a multi billionaire business. The story of ASML can be characterized as a success story by American standards. It all once started in 1984 with just a small number of people in a wooden shack; today ASML is a world leader and an established name all around the world.
After studying applied physics in Twente and electrical engineering in Arnhem, Martin van den Brink started working at ASML in 1984. Colleagues speak vibrantly of how a young Martin van den Brink drew one of the first successful photolithography machines on a flipchart in the early days of the company. Since those days, he climbed up to eventually become President and CTO. In these positions, he leads the technical development of ASML, which currently has more than fourteen thousand employees. Within the company and far beyond he is highly appreciated: both as a person and as a manager, as well as for his extensive technical knowledge. As renowned innovator and pioneer he has received a large number of awards and honors. Since a couple of years, there is even an award named after Martin van den Brink himself as well!
This will be the next edition of the KIVI CEO lectures, a series of lectures organized yearly by KIVI Students Twente, the student department of the Royal Netherlands Society of Engineers in Twente (KIVI). These events are organized in cooperation with local study associations, this time Arago, Scintilla and Astatine, and with the MESA+ institute. In the CEO lectures, top executives speak about their careers and their way to the top, with the aim of stimulating and inspiring students, PhD students and young engineers.
