- Additional customised data storage options for employeesThrough the UT Work-environment (at UT-campus and/or at home), employees have three types of storage locations at their disposal; these are also called shares. These storage locations can be used to: safely store data; share data with one another; install software, use templates, etc.; restore data. Specific information about store and share research data can be found on our Web page about Research Data Management. Description If you only use your local hard disk on your computer, no back-up is created of your files. Should a fault occur with your UT Work-environment, the data on the hard disk could be deleted and all of this data will be lost. To prevent this type of data loss, you must store critical data on the specified central hard disks. Three standard shares have been created for this UT Work-environment: My documents/Home drive; Project and organization documents; UT supply of documents (including house style and software). Request These shares are set up as standard on your UT (MS-Win) Work-environment
- Backups for employees (mail and files)A backup means a copy of data that is stored on a data carrier or within an application. Such copies are made as a preventative measure in order to ensure that no important data will be lost in the event of the data on the original data carrier being lost, becoming damaged or containing the wrong information (through the correct information being overwritten, rendering the data worthless). Description Because data is not or not usually static, it is important to develop a good backup strategy to ensure that data from the past can be retrieved in a structured manner. Two important parameters for determining such a strategy are RPO (Recovery Point Objective) and RTO (Recovery Time Objective). RTO, expressed in time, indicates how long it will take to replace the last backup of the data that has not yet been lost or damaged as a maximum. RTO therefore indicates how long it will take before you can use the data again. RTO is calculated from the moment LISA receives the request to restore a backup. RPO, maximum tolerable
- Data restore on Windows (recover previous version)Restoring individual data Sometimes you accidentally overwrite or remove files. To restore this kind of actions you can restore this data yourself using Previous Versions (PV). For example when you accidentally overwrite or remove a file: Right-click the directory where the file was saved. Click Restore previous versions. Select the date when the right file was available. Click Open. Copy the file to the desired location. Backup/restore Data is saved for one month on redundant hard disks. This back up will only be used for casualties like server failure or broken hard disks. It will not be used for restoring individual files.

Should a fault occur with your UT Workstation, the data on the hard disk will be deleted and all of this data will be lost. To prevent this type of data loss, you must store data on the specified central hard disks.
