Home folder (M drive)

For employees and students

The Home folder (also known as m-drive) is a standard service for UT employees. At commencement of employment the folder is automatically created (account provisioning); the folder is automatically deleted following employment termination. The Home folder is not suitable for storing project data, organisational data or research data.

Specifications

  • Uses a replicated storage cluster where the data between both UT data centres is synchronised in real time. Should one of these data centres go down, the other data centre is automatically selected to ensure the service is never interrupted (high availability). The storage cluster is ISO 27001 and NEN 7510 certified. The storage cluster uses solid state disks (SSDs) to achieve reliable performance;
  • Includes antivirus defences, ransomware protection and backups;
  • Data areas are made available through the SMB protocol;
  • 40GB, cannot be expanded;
  • Files can be recovered to a maximum of 31 days using Previous Versions. Six versions of file/folder are stored daily;
  • Cannot be used offline;
  • eduVPN is required for SMB connections outside of the UT network.

Can be accessed using SMB (\\ad.utwente.nl\home) or Webdrive.

      Before you start

      • This manual is written for Workstations with Windows.

      Central hard disks

      From the data saved on the hard disk of your Workstation no back up will be made. When you have trouble with you Workstation the hard disk could be erased. This is why it’s necessary that you save your data on the central hard disks. On an UT Workstation three central hard disks are configured by default:

      • M: My documents/Home directory
      • P: Project and organisation documents
      • U: UT offer of documents (e.g. corporate design and software)

      Home directory (M:)

      This directory is meant for saving your own work documents. These documents are your own and can’t be shared with others. If you work for different organizations or you moved from one organization to another, then this home directory will remain the same.

      The home directory: \\AD.utwente.nl\HOME\ will be linked to M: by default.

      This disk space is limited to 10 GB. Before you reach this limit you will receive a warning by e-mail.

      Project and organisation directory (P:)

      This directory is meant for offering project data and organization data, as well as sharing data with others. In this directory you can only access the directories from the organization, associations, projects or groups you are in.

      The project directory: \\AD.utwente.nl\ORG wil be linked to P: by default.

      UT directory (U:)

      The UT offers all kinds of documents concerning the entire UT. For example the UT corporate design documents with template information.

      The UT directory: \\AD.utwente.nl\UT will be linked to U: by default

      Manual configuration of directories

      If the data hard disks (M, P, and/or U) are not available in the folder Computer, you can add this manually.

      Step 1: File explorer (Windows)

      • Click File Explorer in taskbar
      • Rightclick This PC
      • Select Map network drive…

      Step 2: What network folder would you like to map?

      • Select Drive M:
      • Type \\ad.utwente.nl\home\<name>
      • Check Reconnect at sign-in
      • Check Connecting using different credentials
      • Click Finish

      Step 3: Enter Network Credentials

      • Type (UT) e-mail address  
      • Type your Password
      • Check Remember my credentials.
      • Click OK

      Open Self Service application

       

      Browse to Shares and connect Webdrive or Shares.

      • Webdrive; Establish a connection to all drives (Home, Org, Projects, UT) through web.
      • Shares; If you are working outside the UT, for example at home, you need a VPN connection to connect to one of the shares (Home, Org, Projects).

      Select Connect to make a connection to one of the shares or webdrive.

       

      Login with your UT account (email address and password) and check the box Remember this password in my keychain.

       

      All drives; Home (personal), Org (Department), Projects, Shares and UT are shown.

      Before you get started

      • Make sure you are connected to Campunet via eduroam, campusnet or VPN.

      Central hard disks & Backups

      PLEASE NOTE: From the data saved on the hard disk of your Workstation no back up will be made. When you have trouble with you Workstation the hard disk could be erased. This is why it’s necessary that you save your data on the central hard disks. On an UT Workstation three central hard disks are configured by default:

      • M: Home directory for personal files
      • P: Project- and organisation documents
      • U: UT documents (i.e. corporate identity and software)

      CONNECT TO THE M, P, AND U DRIVE FOR EMPLOYEES

      Step 1 New server connection

      • In Finder, Click Go.
      • Click Connect to Server…

      Step 2 Personal details

      M drive

      • Under Server Address: enter smb://ad.utwente.nl/home/.
      • Click the + sign.
      • Click Connect.

      P drive

      • Under Server Address: enter smb://ad.utwente.nl/org
      • Click the + sign.
      • Click Connect.

      U drive

      • Under Server Address: enter smb://ad.utwente.nl/ut
      • Click the + sign.
      • Click Connect.

      Step 3 Connect

      • Select Registered User.
      • Under Name: fill in domain account (e.g. GoghV; you can check the logon name here > view account > Username).
      • Under Password: enter the corresponding password.
      • If you wish, you can select Remember this password in my keychain.
      • Click Connect.
  • Webdrive
    • WebDrive on Windows

      WebDAV through file explorer

      Step 1: Add network drive

      • Click This PC (File Explorer).
      • Click Map network drive (for Windows 11, click the 3 dots).
      • Click Map network drive again.

      Step 2: Server address

      • At Drive, select a capital for a server that is free (e.g. W:).
      • At Folder, enter https://webdrive.utwente.nl.
      • Select Reconnect at logon.
      • Select Connect using different credentials.
      • Click Finish.

      Step 3: Login

      • Enter your UT email address and password.
      • Select Remember my credentials and click OK.

      Step 4: Explanation

      • The W: drive you created is protected by a secure protocol called SSL.

      SSL is used on millions of websites for securing the internet connection, like online sales, financial transactions and personal (private) information. All sensitive information will stay secure during transport and is not readable by other people.

      • No UT VPN connection necessary.
      • Aspnet_client folder has no content
      • Home folder = M-Drive.
      • Org folder = P-Drive
      • UT folder = U-Drive

      BE CAREFUL: The data file size is limited at 50 MB max.

      Step 5: Troubleshooting

      Could not reconnect all network drives. (This problem always occurs after restarting the PC.)

      • In File Explorer. This PC.
      • DoubleClick on the red crossed marked W: drive. This will take some time.
      • When an error occurs just DoubleClick the W: drive again till the login box pops up.
      • Check your login credentials and click OK.

      This is a Microsoft Windows network drive issue.

    • WebDrive for MacOS

      This manual has been written for Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard). It is possible that the images for other versions of Mac OS X are slightly different, but the steps are nearly identical.

      WebDAV connection via finder

      Step 1: Connect to server

      • Click Finder on the menu.
      • Click Go.
      • Click Connect to Server…

      Step 2: Server address

      • Under Server Address, enter https://webdrive.utwente.nl.
      • Click the + icon.
      • Click Connect.

      Step 3: Login

      • Select behind Connect as the option Registered User.
      • In the field after Name, enter UT email address.
      • In the field after Password, enter the appropriate password.
      • Select Remember this password.
      • Click Connect.
    • WebDrive on Android

      This manual has been written for mobile devices with Android.

      WebDAV-Access on your Android

      Step 1: Install WebDAV Nav Lite 

      • Open Playstore.
      • Install WebDAV Nav Lite.

      Step 2: Login

      • Open WebDAV Nav Lite.
      • Push the menu button on your phone.
      • Click Add server.
      • Below Name enter Universiteit Twente.
      • Below Server URL enter https://webdrive.utwente.nl in.
      • Below Username enter your (UT) e-mail address.
      • Below Password enter the appropriatie password.
      • Push the menu button on your phone.
      • Click Save.
    • WebDrive on Linux

      This manual has been written for Ubuntu, in other Linux distributions the steps are nearly identical.

      WebDrive on Linux

      Step 1: Install davfs2

      • Open a "terminal" programme
      • $ sudo apt-get install davfs2  (creates /usr/sbin/mount.davfs)
      • Answer ‘yes’ when asked to allow normal users to mount webdrive

      Step 2: Only if you answered 'No' in step 1

      • $ sudo dpkg-reconfigure davfs2
      • Answer "yes/ja" on the posed question

      Step 3: Create a directory that the mount is directed to

      • $ sudo mkdir /media/webdrive

      Step 4: Add to /etc/fstab

      • https://webdrive.utwente.nl    /media/webdrive    davfs    noauto,user,uid=username,gid=groupname 0 0
      • You can find uid & gid using
      • $ id

      Step 5: Create ~/.davfs2/secrets 

      • $ mkdir ~/.davfs2
      • edit ~/.davfs2/secrets and add:
      • /media/webdrive (UT) e-mail address. A plain text password is not allowed.

      Step 6: Change authorisation file

      • $ chmod 400 ~/.davfs2/secrets

      Step 7: Add user to davfs2 group

      • $ edit /etc/group and add user to group davfs2

      Step 8: Mount the UT WebDrive

      • $ mount /media/webdrive

      Hereafter, the M: P: and U: drives are accessable via: /media/webdrive

    • WebDrive via Goodreader

      This manual has been written for IOS.

      WebDAV Access via Goodreader

      Step 1: Add WebDav server

      • Open GoodReader on the iPad.
      • Click Connect to Servers.
      • Click WebDAV Server.

      Step 2: Login

      • In the field behind Readable Title enter UT.
      • In the field behind URL-address enter https://webdrive.utwente.nl in.
      • In the field behind User enter the username of your ICT account (e.g. goghv).
      • In the field behind Password enter the appropriate password.
      • In the field behind Domain enter AD.
      • Click Add.

      credentials

      Now it is possible to look to and annotate your documents on your UT WebDrive at your iPad via Goodreader.
