University of Diversity

Diversity and inclusion lead to more innovation, greater opportunities for all, better access to talent and improved performance.

The University of Twente embraces and encourages diversity in many forms. UT strives to create an inclusive community that fosters an open and supportive research, education, valorization and working environment. We are working to improve diversity, inclusion and equity within our community.

A balanced representation of women in senior academic positions at UT is key to gender diversity and inclusion. We have not achieved this balance yet. However, it is our objective to catch up in this respect, and we are therefore striving to recruit 10 female professors at UT between now and 2020.

Our ultimate goal is to make UT a diverse and inclusive organization, where quality is paramount. We have instituted the prestigious Hypatia Chairs to underscore the importance of diversity and inclusion.

At the moment there are no Hypatia chair vacancies

Hypatia chairs

The Hypatia Chairs have been introduced to increase the number of female talent in academic top positions. The name Hypatia is inspired by the fourt/fifth century Greek scientist Hypatia, who was a teacher in the field of mathematics and philosophy, and is the earliest female mathematician of whose life and work reasonably detailed knowledge exists. In her days, she was very influential as she had the ability to transfer her phenomenal knowledge in an inspiring way. She is a shining example of our High Tech Human Touch approach.

Hypatia Chairs are a mark of quality. A candidate must meet all conditions and requirements before being considered for a post. Vacant chairs will remain unfilled until the right candidate is found.

Hypatia, (born c. 355 CE—died March 415, Alexandria)

Hypatia was a mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher who lived in a very turbulent era in Alexandria’s history. She is the earliest female mathematician of whose life and work reasonably detailed knowledge exists.

She was, in her time, the world’s leading mathematician and astronomer, the only woman for whom such claim can be made. She was also a popular teacher and lecturer on philosophical topics of a less-specialist nature, attracting many loyal students and large audiences.

Recruiting talented staff is an important priority for the University of Twente. Exceptional teaching and research depend on a diverse academic community with a broad range of talents and nationalities. As an international university, UT attracts leading researchers from all over the world.

Please note that Dual Career support does not offer guaranteed results. The chances of finding a job depend on the individual and the local job market. We can provide you with a realistic assessment of your career prospects in and around Twente. We always assist partners looking for an academic job at our university or partner universities in the Netherlands or in Germany, which is just across the border. Those seeking non-academic jobs should be aware that Dutch language skills are generally required on the local job market. At the University of Twente we offer serveral Dutch courses for employees as well as for partners.
