Diversity and inclusion lead to more innovation, greater opportunities for all, better access to talent and improved performance.
The University of Twente embraces and encourages diversity in many forms. UT strives to create an inclusive community that fosters an open and supportive research, education, valorization and working environment. We are working to improve diversity, inclusion and equity within our community.
A balanced representation of women in senior academic positions at UT is key to gender diversity and inclusion. We have not achieved this balance yet. However, it is our objective to catch up in this respect, and we are therefore striving to recruit 10 female professors at UT between now and 2020.
Our ultimate goal is to make UT a diverse and inclusive organization, where quality is paramount. We have instituted the prestigious Hypatia Chairs to underscore the importance of diversity and inclusion.
The Hypatia Chairs have been introduced to increase the number of female talent in academic top positions. The name Hypatia is inspired by the fourt/fifth century Greek scientist Hypatia, who was a teacher in the field of mathematics and philosophy, and is the earliest female mathematician of whose life and work reasonably detailed knowledge exists. In her days, she was very influential as she had the ability to transfer her phenomenal knowledge in an inspiring way. She is a shining example of our High Tech Human Touch approach.
Hypatia Chairs are a mark of quality. A candidate must meet all conditions and requirements before being considered for a post. Vacant chairs will remain unfilled until the right candidate is found.
Recruiting talented staff is an important priority for the University of Twente. Exceptional teaching and research depend on a diverse academic community with a broad range of talents and nationalities. As an international university, UT attracts leading researchers from all over the world.
The decision to accept an appointment with us often involves moving one’s entire family to the Netherlands. We acknowledge that talented prospective staff often have ambitious spouses or partners who also wish to further their careers. The University of Twente offers Dual Career Support to assist partners or spouses of new academic staff in building up a new social network, securing career advice, seeking employment, finding voluntary work or exploring further opportunities for academic endeavour.
Please note that Dual Career support does not offer guaranteed results. The chances of finding a job depend on the individual and the local job market. We can provide you with a realistic assessment of your career prospects in and around Twente. We always assist partners looking for an academic job at our university or partner universities in the Netherlands or in Germany, which is just across the border. Those seeking non-academic jobs should be aware that Dutch language skills are generally required on the local job market. At the University of Twente we offer serveral Dutch courses for employees as well as for partners.
Our facilities for top research are state-of-the-art: MESA+ NanoLab, BioNanoLab, Virtual Reality Lab, DataLab, Experimental Centre for Technical Medicine (ECTM), LEO-Center for Service Robotics, the supersonic wind tunnel, DesignLab, BMS Lab, TPRC, SmartXp and TCO. In the modern laboratories our researchers often work together on simulations, tests and prototypes with external parties. Learn more via our Research page.
The UT has serveral networks for women in science. A common goal of the networks is actively propagating the importance of gender awareness, both within and without the UT.
All of our research and education is aimed at making a difference in today’s society, while setting up the next generation for the future.
