UT authors can publish open access at no cost in seven PLOS journals

Thanks to a national open access (OA) agreement with publisher PLOS, submitting UT authors can publish at no cost* in seven OA journals from PLOS, among which PLOS ONE. Research funders NWO and ZonMw also participate in this agreement.

Please find more information about this agreement below.

The OA team will gladly answer questions you may have about this agreement with PLOS.

For more information about OA publishing as a UT author, visit www.utwente.nl/openaccess.

* At no cost to them. At the end of each year, the faculties will pay a discounted price for their share of the published articles. Articles about NWO- or ZonMw-funded research will be paid for by these funders.

  • Journals included in the agreement

The agreement includes the following seven journals in PLOS’s flat-fee model. These journals account for 90 percent of the Dutch publications with PLOS:

    1. PLOS Complex Systems
    2. PLOS Computational Biology
    3. PLOS Digital Health
    4. PLOS Genetics
    5. PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases
    6. PLOS ONE
    7. PLOS Pathogens

Visit the UT Journal Browser for more information about this agreement.

  • Articles included in the agreement

The agreement is valid for articles that are accepted in 2025 and 2026. All publication types are included.

  • Requirements for OA publishing at no cost

When you submit your article to one of the seven journals in the agreement, make sure to use ‘University of Twente’ as your affiliation. With PLOS’ instructions, you can correctly define your affiliation in their system.

    Important!

When you publish about NWO- or ZonMw-funded research, clearly state the funder info on your article. UT-authored articles that are based on NWO- or ZonMw-funded research will only be paid for by NWO/ZonMw when the funder info is clearly stated on your article. These costs cannot be claimed from your NWO/ZonMw budget.

  • Receiving an invoice

When your article meets the requirements for OA publishing at no cost, you should not receive an invoice. If you believe you wrongfully received an invoice, please contact our University Library.
