The University of Twente offers various physical collections of literature for study and research purposes, as well as some special collections. The collections can be found in the Vrijhof, some small collections can be found in the so-called Educafés.
- Vrijhof
The Vrijhof houses most physical books that belong to the collection of the University Library. These books can be requested via FindUT and collected at the pick-up point of your choice.
The majority of the collection is stored in closed depot in the Vrijhof building. Recent books are stored in open stacks in the quiet area and are freely accessible. - Compulsory literature
Compulsory literature for study programmes can be found at the Vrijhof and at the Educafés. These books are listed as studying material for courses by teaching staff.
The Course Reserves tab in FindUT provides an overview of the compulsory literature of the current and previous quarters. This can be used to quickly gain insight into the availability of the literature and the restrictions of the listed e-books. When selecting "all courses" all disciplines can be found.- Vrijhof location
Compulsory literature for all study programmes can be found on the bookshelves near the entrance of the quiet area (2nd floor).
- Educafé Carré
In the Carré building, in Carré 3134 (Arago room), you can find the Educafé Carré.
This Educafé offers a limited collection of reference works, course books and recommended literature for the bachelor and associated master courses Applied Physics (APH). Via FindUT you can see this collection.
The educafé is managed by members of student union Arago.
The books can be consulted weekdays from 9.00 - 17.00 and during exam periods, weekdays from 11.00 – 16.00, upon showing your student or staff card. - Educafé Horst (Kelder)
In the Horst building, at C 016-018, you can find the Educafé Horst (Kelder)
This Educafé offers a limited collection of reference works, course books and recommended literature for the bachelor and associated master courses of Mechanical Engineering (Werktuigbouwkunde WB), Civil Engineering (Civiele Techniek CI) and Industrial Design Engineering (Industrieel Ontwerpen IO). Via FindUT you can select the collections WBe (ME), IOe (IDE) or CIe (CE).
The educafé is managed by members of student unions Isaac Newton, ConcepT and Daedalus. The books can be consulted weekdays from 9.30 - 16.30 upon showing your student or staff card.
- Educafé TechMed Centre
In the TechMed Centre (Technohal 1302) you can find the Educafé TechMed Centre.
This Educafé offers a limited collection of reference works, course books and recommended literature for the bachelor and associated master courses Biomedical Technology (Biomedische Technologie BM). Via FindUT you can select the collection BMe.
The educafé is managed by members of student union Paradoks. The books can be consulted weekdays from 9.30 - 16.30 upon showing your student or staff card.

- Educafé Zilverling
In the Zilverling building, near Starbucks, you can find the Educafé Zilverling.
This Educafé offers a limited collection of reference works, course books and recommended literature for the bachelor's and master's programmes of Electrical Engineering (Elektrotechniek EL), Applied Mathematics (Toegepaste Wiskunde WI), and Computer Science (Informatica IN). Via FindUT you can see this collection.
The educafé is managed by members of the student unions: E.T.S.V. Scintilla, W.S.G. Abacus and I.C.T.S.V. Inter-Actief.
The books can be consulted via Inter-Actief weekdays from 9.00 - 16.00 upon showing your student or staff card.Location: Zilverling, E101
- Special collections
- Boot collection
The Boot collection is a collection with mainly scientific literature about the social and economic history of the textile industry. The collection is a gift from dr. J.A.P.G. Boot, who received a honory doctorate at the University of Twente in 1996, for his contribution to the historiography of Twente.
The collection contains about 16.000 publications, many of them dealing with the region of Twente and also contains a complete edition of the famous “Blaeu Atlas”,
These books are not for loan. Contact the Library Service Desk for consulting options.
Via FindUT you can select the Boot collection.
- Art collection
The Art Collection contains more than a thousand works of art owned by the University of Twente. Please contact Tessa Lieffering for more information.
