Broadening Ius Promovendi for Associate Professors (UHD 1 and 2)

The University of Twente's Doctorate Board has broadened the Ius Promovendi. From now on, Associate Professors (UHD 1 and 2) with an indefinite employment contract will also be authorised to act as promoters for the duration of their employment.

In accordance with the Higher Education and Scientific Research Act (WHW), the Ius Promovendi is granted to associate professors as long as they are employed by the University of Twente. After the end of their employment, this authority automatically expires. This is different for professors, where this legal restriction does not apply.

Recognition

The broadening of the Ius Promovendi is a positive step forward for several reasons. As more academics are granted the right to confer doctorates, supervisory capacity is increased. This ensures a better distribution of PhD candidates among the various supervisors, which reduces the workload and can improve the quality of supervision. In addition, for project leaders, this step means recognition of ownership of their research projects.

On 15 May, Twente Graduate School (TGS) is organising an information meeting for University associate professors with Ius Promovendi. The associate professors who it concern will soon receive an invitation to this by e-mail. In addition, they will also be informed by letter by the Doctoral Board about the awarding of the Ius Promovendi.

For questions, please contact the Doctorate Board at doctorateboard@utwente.nl, attn: Doctorate Board. The policy will also soon be shared on the service page: Professorship Policies | Service Portal | University of Twente.
