We need more people to wake up about our global trash problem. That's why Tijmen Sissing from Trashpackers hosts cleanups events worldwide. It started with a spontaneous clean-up during a holiday and it grew into a global movement. After a year, more than 11.000 travelers and locals help Tijmen to fight against waste.
On Wednesday October 7, Tijmen Sissing will open the Workday Waste Walk with an inspiring presentation about his journey. Because who better to open this event than the face in the worldwide fight against litter!
During a backpacking vacation in Southeast Asia, Tijmen Sissing was shocked when he discovered the enormous amount of plastic and other trash that was lying on the beaches and floating in the ocean. He immediately knew that something had to be done about that! His hotel gave him garbage bags and he started cleaning up the beach. Many people passing by watched with amazement at what he was doing. Pictures were taken of him and videos were made, which soon appeared on social media. After that his initiative evolved rapidly. In one day, the video was viewed 250.000 times on Facebook and within a week, his platform “The Trashpackers” reached 10.000 followers. Soon, the media started to report his actions and even Radio 1, RTL 4 and CNN showed interest.
