Twente forests are struggling. Pedunculate oak, beech, ash and Norway spruce are declining. Can our forests cope with climate change or should we give them a hand? And if forests are actively rejuvenated? What is the wisest option: native trees first? Or should we plant more species from other climate zones? This Science Café addresses the question of what the future of trees and forests might look like. Seppe De Mits MSc. (Wageningen University) does research on native trees and shrubs. Marcel Horsthuis (ecologist at Staatsbosbeheer in Salland and Twente) takes us through forest ecology and restoration strategies.
