Roller Derby Workshop by Roller Derby Twente (RDT)

Do you want to try a sport that’s completely different? Do you like speed and tactics? Then come and try some Roller Derby: a full contact sport on roller skates!

No skating experience needed!

In this workshop we will get you started on basic skating skills. Or, if you can skate already, we can show you some more advanced techniques. At the end of the workshop you will be able to get a taste of what it’s like to play Roller Derby.

Skates and protective gear will be provided by RDT. For this, they will need your shoe size as well as size for protective gear. If you have your own roller skates or protective gear, you are of course free to bring those.

What is roller derby?

Roller derby is a full contact race, played with roller skates on an oval track. The sport originates from the United States, and is comparable to ice hockey in terms of contact. It was originally a women’s sport, and is now one of the fastest growing sports in the world.

How does it work?

Two skaters, the jammers (one of each team), race against each other. Each team places four other skaters (blockers) on the track to stop the opposing team’s jammer while helping their own jammer get through the opposing blockers. The blockers use physical contact, strategic positioning, as well as other tactics to accomplish this. For each opponent that a jammer passes, they get one point.
