Promoting Safe Societies
The Resilience@UT programme is building towards a knowledge centre to better understand and address complex safety and security challenges. It does so by generating and disseminating knowledge through education and research that connects the diverse disciplines with technologies and by engaging with societal stakeholders.
The focus of the Safe Societies sub-programme is on the following themes:
- Cybercrime
- Data (e.g., data for emergency intervention and data governance)
- Environmental hazards
- Intelligence
- Polarization of society
- Policing
Related topics such as fraud detection and crisis & risk communication are also examined.
The UT through its respective faculties that are involved in safety and security is a member of or partnering with the following initiatives and organizations:
- The Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR) programme: a decade-long research programme promotes a global, multi-disciplinary approach to dealing with the challenges brought on by natural disasters, mitigating their impacts, and improving related policy-making mechanisms. The UT geo-sciences faculty, ITC, is an IRDR Centre of Excellence.
- VU-UT Creating Secure Societies Impact Coalition: This collaboration of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and the University of Twente focuses on strengthening the resilience and security of our society so that it becomes adaptive and remains stable in times of crisis. The focal areas are crisis management, undermining of society, and polarization.
- The Center for Security and Digitalisation based in Apeldoorn is a knowledge centre where entrepreneurs and public institutions share issues around security and digital transformation
