These manuals describe the central hard disks (M, P, and U) and the procedures to restore data.

Introduction

On the UT Workstation are facilities for saving data. These facilities are for:

  • Saving data safely;
  • Sharing data;
  • Installing software, templates, etc.
  • Restoring data.

General information

  • Description

    If you only use your internal hard disk of your UT Workstation, no back-up is created of your files. Should a fault occur with your UT Workstation, the data on the hard disk will be deleted and all of this data will be lost. To prevent this type of data loss, you must store data on the specified central hard disks. Three standard directories have been created for this on the UT Workstation:

    • M: My documents/Home directory;
    • P: Project and organisation documents;
    • U: UT supply of documents (including house style and software).
  • Requests

    These directories are set up as standard on your UT Workstation. Therefore no request has to be submitted. If the directories are, however, not installed on your UT Workstation, you can still do this yourself (see the manuals below). Additional space can be requested for the home directories. The standard 10GB can be extended to 20GB or 40GB. This can be requested from the Service Desk.

  • Costs

    If the use of the directories remains below 10GB, no additional costs will be charged. If the 10GB space is extended to 20GB or 40GB, additional costs will be charged to the faculty or service. For more information about these additional costs, please consult the rates page.

  • Conditions

    You have to have a UT Workstation and an ICT account.

  • Delivery

    No delivery time applies to this service. Extension of the storage space is arranged immediately.

  • Support

    A back-up is made of all directories. This back-up is saved for 1 month and can only be used in the event of emergencies, such as non-functioning of a server. PLEASE NOTE! This back-up cannot be used to restore individual files.

  • Extra information

    Three different groups of files can be stored on the three directories that are set up as standard on your UT Workstation. Below is a short description of the three directories.

    • M: home directory 
      This directory is intended to be used to store your own work documents. These documents are your personal documents and are not to be shared with other people. If you work for multiple organisations, or if you relocate to a different organisation, this directory will remain the same. This disk space is limited to 10 GB. You will receive a warning by email before you reach this limit.
    • P: project and organisation directory
      This directory is intended to offer project data and organisation data and to share data with one another. In this directory, you will only see those directories of companies, associations, projects or groups of which you are a member.
    • U: UT directory
      Various documents are offered by the UT that are of importance for the entire UT. An example is the UT house style with template information.

    Before you start

    • This manual is written for Workstations with Windows.
    • This manual uses a consistent style of writing: references to text and buttons on screens are printed in italics, information that you have to enter yourself is printed in bold.  

    Central hard disks

    From the data saved on the hard disk of your Workstation no back up will be made. When you have trouble with you Workstation the hard disk could be erased. This is why it’s necessary that you save your data on the central hard disks. On an UT Workstation three central hard disks are configured by default:

    • M: My documents/Home directory
    • P: Project and organisation documents
    • U: UT offer of documents (e.g. corporate design and software)

    Home directory (M:)

    This directory is meant for saving your own work documents. These documents are your own and can’t be shared with others. If you work for different organizations or you moved from one organization to another, then this home directory will remain the same.

    The home directory: \\AD.utwente.nl\HOME\ will be linked to M: by default.

    This disk space is limited to 10 GB. Before you reach this limit you will receive a warning by e-mail.

    Project and organisation directory (P:)

    This directory is meant for offering project data and organization data, as well as sharing data with others. In this directory you can only access the directories from the organization, associations, projects or groups you are in.

    The project directory: \\AD.utwente.nl\ORG wil be linked to P: by default.

    UT directory (U:)

    The UT offers all kinds of documents concerning the entire UT. For example the UT corporate design documents with template information.

    The UT directory: \\AD.utwente.nl\UT will be linked to U: by default

    Manual configuration of directories

    If the data hard disks (M, P, and/or U) are not available in the folder Computer, you can add this manually.

    Step 1: File explorer (Windows)

    • Click File Explorer in taskbar
    • Rightclick This PC
    • Select Map network drive…

    Step 2: What network folder would you like to map?

    • Select Drive M:
    • Type \\ad.utwente.nl\home\<name>
    • Check Reconnect at sign-in
    • Check Connecting using different credentials
    • Click Finish

    Step 3: Enter Network Credentials

    • Type (UT) e-mail address  
    • Type your Password
    • Check Remember my credentials.
    • Click OK

    Before you get started

    • The manual is written for Mac OS X 10.9.
    • This manual uses a consistent style of writing: references to text and buttons on screens are printed in italics, information that you have to enter yourself is printed in bold.
    • Make sure you are connected to Campunet via eduroam, campusnet or VPN.

    Central hard disks & Backups

    CONNECT TO THE M, P, AND U DRIVE FOR EMPLOYEES

    Step 1 New server connection

    • In Finder, Click Go.
    • Click Connect to Server…

    Step 2 Personal details

    M drive

    • Under Server Address: enter smb://ad.utwente.nl/home/.
    • Click the + sign.
    • Click Connect.

    P drive

    • Under Server Address: enter smb://ad.utwente.nl/org
    • Click the + sign.
    • Click Connect.

    U drive

    • Under Server Address: enter smb://ad.utwente.nl/ut
    • Click the + sign.
    • Click Connect.

    Step 3 Connect

    • Select Registered User.
    • Under Name: fill in domain account (e.g. GoghV; you can check the logon name here > view account > Username).
    • Under Password: enter the corresponding password.
    • If you wish, you can select Remember this password in my keychain.
    • Click Connect.

Use the Bookmark this page button on Service Portal pages to add that page to the My Favorites section. To add web applications, use the star icon in the webapplication list. To add pages outside the Service Portal, use the Add custom bookmark button above. Add your favorite apps to your bookmarks by using the favorite button
