Giancarlo Guizzardi to receive ER 2023 Fellows Award

Full professor at the Semantics, Cybersecurity & Services (SCS) at the faculty EEMCS, Giancarlo Guizzardi, has been selected as one of the recipients of the ER 2023 Fellows Award.

The ER Fellows Award

The ER Fellows Award is an honour given to selected individuals in the conceptual modelling international scientific community in recognition of their contributions to conceptual modelling research, education, and community service. According to the Selection Committee professor Guizzardi showed outstanding contributions in all key dimensions required to become an ER Fellow. The official award ceremony will be held at ER Conference 2023, in Lisbon, Portugal, on 6-9 November 2023.

Conceptual Modelling

Conceptual Modelling is a foundational topic in Computer Science aimed at developing theories, methods and tools for creating precise conceptual representations of real-world phenomena for areas such as software engineering, databases, and Artificial Intelligence (AI). In particular, it is thought to play a fundamental role in data integration, systems design and evolution, and in Explainable AI.

The ER Conference

The International Conference on Conceptual Modeling is the main international forum for discussing the state of the art, emerging issues, and future challenges in research and practice on conceptual modelling. Topics of interest span the entire spectrum of conceptual modelling, including research and practice in areas such as theories of concepts and ontologies, techniques for transforming conceptual models into effective implementations, and methods and tools for developing and communicating conceptual models.

Giancarlo Guizzardi

Giancarlo Guizzardi is a full professor and chair of the Semantics, Cybersecurity & Services (SCS) group at the faculty of EEMCS. Before that, he was a full professor at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, Italy, guiding the Conceptual and Cognitive Modelling Research Group (CORE). He co-founded Brazil's Ontology and Conceptual Modelling Research Group (NEMO) and actively contributes to Formal and Applied Ontology, Conceptual Modelling, and Information Systems Engineering. His interdisciplinary approach, integrating Philosophy, Logics, Linguistics, and Cognitive Science, addresses complex issues. With nearly 400 published papers and prominent roles in key conferences, he also serves as Associate Editor for respected journals. He is also an ACM Distinguished Speaker. Beyond academia, he's engaged in technology transfer projects, spanning areas like Telecommunications and Digital Journalism. As a Guest Professor at Stockholm University, he explores Value-Based Modelling, CyberSocial Systems, and Ethical Information Systems.
