Juliana Medal awarded to Marijke Schmand

Marijke Schmand has received the Juliana Medal from the University of Twente on the occasion of her retirement. The medal was presented by Mirjam Bult, vice-chair of the Executive Board, on Marijke’s farewell ceremony, which could not take place earlier because of COVID-19. The award honours her tireless efforts on behalf of the ICSC, Drienerburght and U Park Hotel extending over many years.

Marijke Schmand began her career at UT in 1987 as resident manager of the then International Congress and Study Centre (ICSC), and was later its hotel manager. Afterwards, she served for years as director of the conference hotel Drienerburght, and was closely involved with the realisation of the U Park Hotel, which welcomed its first guests in 2019.

Mirjam Bult: “With her strong sense of professionalism and personal attention for every guest, Marijke was the face of the University. For many staff members, Drienerburght and U Park Hotel became something of a second home, thanks to Marijke. Moreover, she played a crucial role in developing the Drienerburght conference hotel into the modern U Park Hotel. We are very grateful to Marijke for this work.”

In honour of her work, U Parkhotel has named their board room after Marijke.

Marijke Schmand was regularly interviewed by U-Today. Read more here about her years at the Drienerburght, the move to the U Park Hotel, and the new hotel’s future in the Hogekamp.
