The Dutch Research Council (NWO) has awarded a Vidi grant of 800,000 euros to UT-researchers Nienke Bosschaarts, Bas Borsje and Chuan Li. This grant will enable the three laureates to strengthen their own, innovative line of research and set up a competitive research team over the next five years.
Dr. Ir. Nienke Bosschaarts - Breastfeeding: measuring what babies drink

Nienke Bosschaarts' research focuses on breastfeeding. Breastfeeding offers unique benefits for mother and child, but it is not always problem-free. An accurate determination of breast milk intake by the child is often desirable, but objective measurement methods are lacking. That is why Bosschaarts focuses within her project on developing new methods to quantify the milk flow and composition from mother to child.
Dr. Ir. Bas Borsje - Living on the edge

Bas Borsje's project focuses on developing 'living dikes' to make the coastal strip climate-proof. These so-called salt marshes can grow with the rising sea level and also slow down waves. Knowing the dynamics and strength of these systems under extreme weather conditions makes it possible to build a living dike worldwide.
Dr. Chuan Li - From 3D to 1D: desired topological states all-in-one

Chuan Li has been working for several years on a special material that can hold topological states in all dimensions for topological quantum computing. Within this project, a new platform is being developed to integrate and scale up the basic elements.
Vidi is aimed at experienced researchers who have carried out successful research for a several years after obtaining their PhDs. Together with Veni and Vici, Vidi is part of the NWO Talent Programme. Researchers in the Talent Programme are free to submit their own subject for funding. NWO thus encourages curiosity-driven and innovative research. NWO selects researchers based on the quality of the researcher, the innovative character of the research, the expected scientific impact of the research proposal and the possibilities for knowledge use.
