Olivine compensation for CO2 footprint
“Doing nothing is no option.” The Dutch professor Albert van den Berg from the UT in the Netherlands (University Twente) and his BIOS group have bought 43.000 kilograms of olivine-sand to compensate the CO2-footprint of their group in 2018. Being technical minded he’s interested in the more technical solutions for the surplus of CO2 in the atmosphere. “Olivine is a rock as old as the earth is, but for most people it sounds hocus pocus that it captures CO2. The weathering of olivine rock, stones and sand serves as a very slow global thermostat. By spreading olivine sand we can speed this up and make our own contribution to capture CO2.”
