Prestigious cooperation between the University of Twente and CONACyT

The University of Twente plans to further cooperate with the national council of science and technology in Mexico (Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnologia), abbreviated as CONACyT.

Thanks to this cooperation, top Mexican students can obtain a grant for a Master’s degree course or PhD research at the University of Twente. CONACyT also offers University of Twente students the opportunity and financial support to take part in a short stay visiting programme (fellowship) at one of Mexico’s top universities.

CONACyT

CONACyT is the organization that draws up policy in the area of science and technology for the Mexican government. CONACyT can be compared to the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and the National Science Foundation in the United States. The University of Twente and the University of Groningen are the only two Dutch universities officially working with CONACyT.

CONACyT offers grants to Mexican Master’s degree students and PhD students, and to students at partner institutions. CONACyT’s partners include only very highly qualified Mexican programmes (Registry of Quality Graduate Programs, abbreviated as PNPC in Spanish). University of Twente Master’s degree students and PhD students are given the opportunity to spend a year conducting research at the Universidad Autónoma de Mexico (UNAM). This is the largest research university in Latin America (300,000 students) and number four in the prestigious QS Latin America University Ranking. UNAM will also be visited by the University of Twente delegation currently in Mexico, to strengthen our ties.

Milestone

“The cooperation with CONACyT is an important step towards achieving the goals laid down in the University of Twente’s vision for internationalization”, says University of Twente Executive Board Chairman Victor van der Chijs, who signed the cooperation agreement in Mexico. “We want to strengthen the ties with Latin America and CONACyT is an important partner. The Mexican government’s current science and technology policy has a strong focus on the themes of water and energy. The University of Twente excels in these areas and CONACyT has acknowledged that. We are immensely proud of this milestone.”

Dynamics of education

PhD. Enrique Cabrero, General Director of CONACyT, emphasized that, nowadays, universities on a global scale have to adapt to the constant flow of knowledge in a way never seen before. He highlighted the work done by the University of Twente to achieve this goal.
"The University of Twente plays a very important role with the model they have created, where research is a crucial part of the teaching process. It is essential in the new dynamics of education and social progress", he stated.
