This week marked the official start of the alliance between the Cradle to Cradle (C2C) chair at the University of Twente and the City of Venlo. The chair will be held by Prof. Michael Braungart, co-founder of the C2C philosophy. Prof. Rikus Eising of the University of Twente presented a Certificate of Endowment to Mayor Hubert Bruls of Venlo, officially launching the alliance.
Cradle to Cradle is a new way of looking at sustainable design. The C2C philosophy focuses on adding value and creating cycles. Raw materials are reused in these cycles without loss of quality or adverse effects on the environment. In the C2C approach, residuals become the raw materials for the next product cycle.
Michael Braungart is a professor at the University of Twente. His department will work closely with the City of Venlo, which has embraced C2C principles. The idea is that in future UT students will go to Venlo to take classes and choose regional companies and agencies for their work placements.
