Richard Stevens was named as the winner of the Shell Master Award at the exciting final of the Shell Bachelor and Master Awards held at the University of Twente on 5 March. As chair of the judging panel, Rector Magnificus Ed Brinksma presented Richard with a cheque for €5000 for his excellent research in the field of sustainable energy.
As part of Professor Detlef Lohse’s group Physics of Fluids, Richard researched heat transfer in a rotating turbulent flow, and his results can be directly applied, for example to optimize rotary separation technology by removing CO2 in gas and liquid forms. The judges praised his clear explanation of this complex process.
Twente student, Maike Baltussen (Chemical Technology) was also selected as a finalist for the Shell Bachelor Award, but the first prize of €2500 was awarded to her Eindhoven colleague Tim van Amstel.
