Today, our flag hangs at half-mast in memory of the Enschede fireworks disaster, precisely 25 years ago. On 13 May 2000, a massive explosion destroyed the residential area of Roombeek, killing 23 people and injuring hundreds. With this tribute, we pause to remember the victims and the disaster's deep impact on the city.
The fireworks disaster marked a turning point for Enschede: besides the immense personal suffering, it triggered years of reconstruction of the affected neighbourhood. The disaster remains an important part of the shared memory of the city and the university.
