The University of Twente has sold the Faculty building at Hengelosestraat 99 in Enschede to the Central Government Real Estate Agency. Currently, ITC, the Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation, is still located in this building. At the beginning of 2023, the Faculty will move to the Langezijds building on the University of Twente campus. The building on Hengelosestraat will then become available. With the sale to the Governmental Property Agency, the building will eventually become the new home of various governmental departments, after redevelopment.
UT is very pleased with the sale of the ITC building to the Central Government Real Estate Agency. The building will thus remain available within the public domain. By using the building to house various governmental services, it will also contribute to creating employment for the city of Enschede and the area.
Nico-Tom Pen on the sale: "We have reached good agreements with the Government Real Estate Agency. This means that ITC only has to move once, directly from Hengelosestraat to the campus. The arrival of ITC at the campus will facilitate co-operation and interaction with other Faculties. It will not only create a better synergy between the various fields of education and research, but will also offer benefits in different ways through the joint use of teaching and research facilities, facility services, workplaces, and technical maintenance services."
The Municipality of Enschede is also pleased that this large, striking building will continue to have a meaningful public purpose; they are also providing support to make it all possible planning-wise.
Peter van Yren, spokesperson of the Central Government Real Estate Agency, about the redevelopment of the building on Hengelosestraat: "We will renovate the building - that has a surface area of over 20,000 m² - and make it more sustainable in the coming years. We will do this by generating sustainable energy and adding better insulation. The Government Real Estate Agency buys buildings regularly, which in the long term constitutes a more efficient strategy than renting properties. It also gives us the opportunity to make the buildings we purchase more sustainable. When buying a building, its social and economic added value come first. This means, for example, that if we renovate a building, we re-use materials. It also means that we keep long-term maintenance costs as low as possible. In short, we make sure that our real estate lasts longer, for the future."
International real estate advisor Cushman & Wakefield initiated this transaction and advised the University of Twente as the seller in realising this transaction.
