Pre-master Industrial Design Engineering

Are you interested in joining the Master’s programme in Industrial Design Engineering after you have obtained your Bachelor’s degree? If so, you may be required to take a pre-Master’s course. Check the admission requirements to find out whether you are eligible.

What is a pre-Master's programme?

The pre-Master's programme is a transfer and bridging programme for higher professional education (‘hbo’ in Dutch) or university education (international) Bachelor's programme students who wish to obtain a university Master's degree, but who cannot be admitted directly. Once you have successfully completed the pre-Master's programme, you will be granted admission to the Master’s programme in Industrial Design Engineering. When you apply for the Master’s Industrial Design Engineering via Studielink, the admission committee will decide if you are admitted directly to the Master or if a pre-Master is required.

Pre-Master's goal

The pre-Master’s goal is to prepare you for the Master’s programme in Industrial Design Engineering. After successfully completing the pre-Master’s programme within one year, you will be able to immediately start the Master's programme Industrial Design Engineering. After obtaining your Master’s degree, you will be a design engineer capable of tackling cross-disciplinary, complex challenges in the field industrial design.

Start Date

The pre-Master's programme starts every September. After succesfully completing the pre-Master’s programme, you can directly enrol in  the Master's programme. Students doing their pre-Master’s as part of their University of Applied Sciences degree (transfer minor/'Kies op maat') can  enrol in the Master’s programme in February or September after finishing their University of Applied Sciences Bachelor's programme.

Dutch students can start the pre-Master's programme during their Bachelor's programme as a minor or after obtaining their Bachelor’s degree.

Programme

For University of Applied Sciences (Dutch HBO) students

A pre-Master's programme contains 30.5 credits. This is a fulltime study programme of one semester.

For (international) university students

The study workload, or number of EC, for university students, depends on previous education and will not be the same for everyone. Pre-Master’s programmes for university students range between 10-60 EC. Please contact the pre-Master coordinator for more information.

Language

The (pre)-Master's programme is in English as is the required literature.

Admission

The pre-Master’s programme is designed for students who have the motivation and capacities to obtain an academic degree from an English-taught Master’s programme in Industrial Design Engineering. Your eligibility for admission to the pre-Master's programme in Industrial Design Engineering depends on your previous education. Only students enrolled in a related educational programme such as Mechanical Engineering or Industrial Design are admissible to the pre-Master’s.  In some cases where the student’s prior education is not related to the Master's programme, the examination board can make an exception. An individual request for this must be submitted to the pre-Master coordinator.

Requirements for Dutch students:

  • Check the transfermatrix to see which Master’s programmes are accessible with your Bachelor’s programme.
  • A minimum level of English and Mathematics (VWO-level English and Mathematics B). This is the student's responsibility. Previous experiences have shown that hardly any students manage to successfully complete the transfer minor if they do not comply with these requirements.
  • University of Applied Sciences (HBO) students are admitted based on their overall results: an average of 7.5 (excluding the internship and final project) or higher on the bachelor courses, and an 8 or higher for the final project.
  • University of Applied Sciences students who want to do the pre-Master’s as a transfer minor must have obtained at least 120 EC in order to be admitted to the transfer minor.

Rules of the pre-Master’s programme

The pre-master’s programme is designed not only to address any deficiencies in your prior knowledge, but it is also an effective way to find out whether studying at a research university is right for you. Therefore, the following rules apply:

  • The pre-Master’s programme must be successfully completed within one year
  • There is a maximum of re-sit per course
  •  If you do not successfully complete the pre-Master’s, it is not possible to start a pre-Master’s in another programme at the faculty of Engineering Technology

Pre-master Application route

The application process for the pre-Master's programme depends on your personal situation (application during or after your Bachelor's programme) and your previous education (e.g. university of applied sciences or university background).

Keep an eye on the application deadlines and check them prior to your application (pre-Master and Master deadlines are most of the times identical). However, the deadline for University of Applied Sciences (HBO) students depends on the route you chose. For a pre-Master's programme during a HBO Bachelor's programme – the so-called transfer minor – the deadline is earlier than the deadline for a pre-Master's programme after the HBO programme.
