16 Apr 2015 - Final event Telemedicine and Personalized Care You are all invited for the final presentation of the joint German-Dutch Telemedicine and Personalized Care project. This event will take place in The Gallery on the Campus of the University of Twente and starts at 12:00 hrs (closing remarks at 16:00 hrs). It presents an overview of the results and highlights of the past five years. 13 Apr 2015 - North-East Netherlands stimulates innovation in medical imaging-guided technology On 16 April 2015, the North-East of the Netherlands is joining forces for innovations in image-guided technology within the healthcare sector. The Center for Medical Imaging North East Netherlands (CMINEN), a partnership between the University of Twente (including the MIRA institute), UMC Groningen, Siemens, Radboudumc and other (business) partners, is organizing a meeting with the theme ‘The guidance of imaging’. During the meeting, several researchers, medical specialists and companies will share their expertise and vision with the aim of promoting cooperation and accelerating the implementation of new medical devices. The event will take place on the Novio Tech Campus in Nijmegen. 8 Apr 2015 - Researchers at the UT and Radboud UMC create a ‘living kidney membrane’ Researchers at the MIRA research institute of the University of Twente and the Radboudumc have created a ‘living membrane’ combining kidney epithelial cells with a polymeric artificial membrane. This achievement is a first but significant step towards development a new treatment for kidney patients. This research, which started within the BMM - BioKid project (2009-2014), it is currently continued within the EU Marie Curie ITN project ‘Bioart’. The aim is achieving improved dialysis techniques and possibly leading to development of a portable kidney, or even an implantable artificial kidney. This collaborative research, of the groups of Prof. Dr. D. Stamatialis in MIRA and Dr R. Masereeuw at Radboudumc, has been published in the scientific journal Acta Biomaterialia. 20 Mar 2015 - Twente companies accompanied by royal couple on mission to northern Germany On 19 and 20 March 2015, Twente combined its forces and took part in a national mission to northern Germany. Today’s discussions between Dutch and German entrepreneurs were most unusual in that they took place in the presence of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima. This was a memorable experience. The participation of the royal couple opens doors - such as those of the German company Dräger in Lübeck where the discussions were held. 12 Mar 2015 - Ijzerman nominated for President Elect of ISPOR Maarten IJzerman, chairman of the Health Technology and Services Research (HTSR) department and professor at the University of Twente, has been nominated for the position of President-Elect of the Board of Directors of the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR). The international scientific association promotes research into the effectiveness of medical technology and medicines, with the focus being on the economic health benefits and the impact on the patient. ISPOR contributes further by ensuring that this research provides useful information for healthcare. IJzerman, already a member of the Board of Directors, hopes to contribute to the goals of ISPOR with his candidacy for the coming three years. 9 Mar 2015 - Announcement Concert against Rheumatism On 29 May, the Concert Against Rheumatism will take place on the initiative of Joke Bleumink (herself an amateur violinist, who started building violins when rheumatism made it impossible for her to play). The proceeds from ticket sales will be devoted entirely to the research by MIRA’s professor Marcel Karperien into the arthritis plaster. You are cordially invited to attend this evening at Paleis het Loo to enjoy a unique concert. Specially for this occasion, the musicians from the Valerius Ensemble of HET Symfonie Orkest will exchange their own instruments for the violins and cello built by Joke.

4 Mar 2015 - Video-competition: Science in twenty seconds Is it possible to summarize scientific research in a film lasting just twenty seconds? The only answer to that is: Yes. The 20 Seconds Science video-competition at the University of Twente was rounded off this week. Scientists from the MESA+ and MIRA scientific institutes accepted the challenge to create extremely short films in which they presented their research in a way that people could appreciate. This resulted in a total of 26 attractive short films, many of them with a touch of humour. There were prizes for three of them. 20 Feb 2015 - Marloes Letteboer appointed managing director of MIRA Marloes Letteboer is the new managing director of the University of Twente’s MIRA research institute. She will succeed Martijn Kuit, who held the position for nearly six years.
