First-time set-up of iPhone/iPad device

After you have taken the iPhone/iPad out of the box for the first time and switched it on, you need to take a few steps to set-up the device. In these steps, you will set up the iCloud service, the default language as well as a Wi-Fi connection. Below, we will explain what you need to consider for each step.

IMPORTANT: If you have already used an iPhone/iPad and if you want to place a back-up of this iPhone onto your new device, then create a back-up (iTunes/iCloud) of the old iPhone/iPad so it can be copied onto the new device as explained in step 6. The instructions for creating a back-up can be found later in this document.

A back-up will only store settings and installed applications; you will need to enter all passwords again. The steps regarding email and eduroam below can be skipped if you are about to install a back-up in which this has already been set up.

iOS versions older than 9.2 could present the steps below in a different order; it is also possible that you can skip steps. Some details can differ between iPhone or iPad, but the steps below are mainly the same.

STEP 1: Switch on the iPhone/iPad by pressing and holding the power button on the top or side of the device. After seeing the Apple logo, you will be presented with your device's lock screen. Swipe the button from left to right to start.

STEP 2: Select which language you want to use on your device. This is unrelated to the country in which you live; you can select the country on the next page.

STEP 3: Connect your device to a Wi-Fi network near you and/or to eduroam.

  • To connect to eduroam, select the network and enter your email address and enter your password corresponding to this account in the field below.
  • Press 'Connect'.
  • You will be presented with a certificate screen in which you are asked to add radius.utwente.nl. Press 'Trust'. eduroam will be checked.
  • Press 'Next'.
  • The device will now be activated. This is fully automated and will not take more than 1 minute.

STEP 4: Choose whether or not your applications can use your GPS location. Based on this information, an app can see where you currently are in the world. A newly installed app will still ask you permission to use this feature even after this option is enabled. You can also disable the options in your device's settings later.

STEP 5: You will have the option of enabling Touch ID; a system that is used to unlock your iPhone/iPad using your fingerprint.

  • Place your finger on the home button at the bottom of the device without clicking it.
  • Place your finger on the home button in multiple positions multiple times to teach the device to recognize your fingerprint.
  • Subsequently enter a 6-digit code that can also be used to unlock the device (by clicking 'Access Code Options' you can also opt for a 4-digit or alphanumerical code).
  • If you do not wish to enable Touch ID, then choose 'configure Touch ID later'.

STEP 6: If you want to import the data from an old iPhone or iPad, then you can choose to import a back-up created using iTunes. In order to do so, the device must be connected to a computer with iTunes and follow the steps indicated on the screen. If your previous device used the iCloud service, then it is also possible to log in there and download your old data through this service. You do not need a separate computer for this. If you do not want to import a back-up or if this is your first iOS device, then select 'Set up as new iPhone/iPad'.

Important: Back-ups created on an iPad cannot be imported on an iPhone and vice versa.

STEP 7: Indicate whether you want to use the device as a completely new iPhone/iPad, or if you wish to import data from another Apple device. If you choose the former, then all you have to do is log in using your Apple ID; the account to which, among other things, the services for iPhone/iPad are linked. You can also create an Apple ID (is it clear how to do this?).

STEP 8: On the right hand side, 'Agree' to the conditions and select agree again in the pop-up.

STEP 9: Siri, 'Enable Siri' or 'Enable Siri later' (your choice)

STEP 10: In the Diagnostics Data screen, choose between 'Send to Apple' or 'Do not send' (your choice)

STEP 11 (iPhone): In the 'Display Zoom' screen, you can choose a default or zoomed-in display for the screen. After choosing and viewing the preview, you can press 'Next' in the top right.

STEP 12: The text 'Welcome to iPhone/iPad' will appear. Press 'Get started' to continue

STEP 13: If you want to set up email of the University of Twente, then you can press 'Mail' on the bottom of the screen. Then choose 'Exchange'. Enter your UT email address, password, and a description of your account. When you press 'Next', a screen will appear where you can choose the items you want to synchronize. Press 'Save' in the top right to save your choice (you can change this later in the settings).

Creating a back-up

Things to consider when creating an Apple device back-up

  • You can create a back-up of an Apple device in two ways: through iCloud or through iTunes. To create and import a back-up of an Apple device, we refer you to the Apple User Guides:
  • Problems can occur if your iPhone or iPad does not have more space than your iCloud; you will not be able to create a back-up. There are two solutions to this problem:
    • You can pay expand the iCloud storage space (at your own cost) so you can create a full back-up;
    • You can create a back-up through iTunes. However, this iTunes back-up can only be created and imported from the PC on which the original iTunes back-up was created.
    • Library, ICT Services & Archive (LISA) does not have other back-up facilities for Apple devices with large internal memory sizes.
  • Note: creating a back-up takes time (16GB takes about 15 minutes, 32GB about 30 minutes, 64GB about 45 minutes and 128GB about an hour).
  • A back-up can only be imported during the very first installation of a new device; otherwise the device needs to be reset to factory settings.
  • For a good iCloud back-up through Wi-Fi, you need to stay in one place for an optimal Wi-Fi connection.
  • An iTunes back-up can only be created through a wired connection and can only be imported from the PC on which the original iTunes back-up was created.

Importing contacts from Android to iPhone/iPad

Importing contacts is done using the following settings:

  10. Description: Enter a description for the account (e.g. Personal Contacts)
  11. Press 'Next'
  12. You can now find the contacts you synchronized on your Android device under 'Contacts' on your iPhone

Installing Apps

Would you like to do more on your device than what is currently possible? Then you can install applications (apps) on your device. These apps can be bought or downloaded for free from the App Store, Apple's database for all iOS apps. To download an app, you can use the Apple ID you created and link a credit card to it, for instance. If you did not create an Apple ID in the previous steps, then you can do this through iTunes (see ZenWorks) or on appleid.apple.com.

You can visit the App Store by pressing the blue icon on the start screen of your iPhone/iPad.

By using the tabs at the bottom of the screen, you can indicate how you wish to view the App Store. For instance, the 'Featured' tab contains all apps Apple thinks are interesting. The 'Popular' tab contains the currently most-downloaded applications.

You can tap an app to view more information and subsequently buy or download it by tapping the price twice.

Some applications have a little plus sign next to the price. This means that it not only can be installed on your iPhone, but that it can also be used on the iPad using the iPad's full resolution. Apps that are only intended for the iPad cannot be downloaded on the iPhone.
