Wednesday 18 June 2014, 13:00 - 17:00 hrs
Dutch spoken event!
Have you already tape-sealed the camera on your pc? Do you switch-off the WiFi of your smart phone before entering a shop to avoid being digitally traced? Does your energy-supplier know at what time you go to bed at night and rise in the morning? Is the code of your burglar alarm automatically known to the police force and the fire brigade? Do tax authorities have access to your personnel file and can businesses look into your study results (or those of your children)?
It seems that we increasingly struggle with these kinds of questions, as the world around us is constantly enriched with new high tech information and registration systems, which want to (or suggest they need to) keep track of our personal data. Several question arise: to what extend do these systems pose a threat to our (right to) privacy, are we sufficiently aware of such possible infringements, and if so, are we willing to sacrifice privacy for some greater (common) good.
On Wednesday 18 June 2014 the annual symposium of the JPO - het Juridisch Platform Oost (LPE – Legal Platform East-Netherlands; a partnership between Saxion University for Applied Science and the Universiteit of Twente) – will feature various presentations (followed by discussion) about current events of Privacy Law in Practice, in the context of the increasing technology-driven capabilities of collecting, enhancing and sharing information about our private lives: High Tech, Privacy Check?
The symposium is open to jurists, lawyers, legal professionals and persons otherwise actively involved in legal issues. Presenting and discussing the theme of Privacy Law in Practice is intended to bring a broadly informed legal audience up to date with current challenges to our privacy due to novel technical systems.
For more information about the theme, the program, the speakers and enrolment, please visit the JPO-site (only in Dutch). The research carried out by the UT in this research falls under the IGS institute. At Saxion this programme is supervised at the Research Center for Urban and Environmental Development.
The symposium starts at 13.30 hrs. (walk-in from 13.00 hrs. coffee/tea/sandwiches) and will end at 17.00 hrs. (ultimately – after which drinks are served).
Venue: The Gallery/Campus UT
Admission is free
Timely enrollment is required; please visit the JPO-site.
