Dr Michel Versluis appointed Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America

Dr Michel Versluis from the MIRA Institute for Biomedical Technology and Technical Medicine and MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology at the University of Twente has been named Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America (ASA). The nomination and appointment are for his contributions to high-speed imaging of fine scale acoustic phenomena.

Versluis built the fastest high-speed camera in the world and studied the behaviour of ultrasound contrast agent microbubbles for medical ultrasound imaging and therapy. The bubbles can be used to quantify the perfusion of organs (or lack thereof). Labelling the bubbles with specific antibodies enables the identification of individual cancer cells. Versluis also studied mechanisms of local drug delivery using bubbles.

In addition, Versluis has helped to compile knowledge in industrial ultrasound. For example, he captured detailed images of droplet formation in piezo inkjet printing, and studied ultrasonic cleaning in the IC semiconductor industry. He was also closely involved in research into ultrasonic irrigation of inflamed root canals, a highly promising endodontic therapy. Versluis conducts his research in the Physics of Fluids Group of the MIRA Institute for Biomedical Technology and Technical Medicine
and MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology at the University of Twente.

Acoustical Society of America
ASA Fellows are selected based on nominations from its current Fellow members.. The Society has more than 8,000 members. Of its 900 Fellows, only 200 work outside the US.
