Looking back: Jamie Hyneman visits the UT

Jamie Hyneman, honorary doctor of the UT and former MythBuster, looks back on an inspiring visit to the campus.

In 2011, Dr Hyneman was awarded an honorary doctorate from the UT, together with his colleague, Adam Savage. This time round, he spent three days talking to schoolchildren, students, researchers and the general public. During the two ‘College Tours’ in the Waaier building, he talked about his career and about his passion for science and technology. On both days, he was bombarded with questions from the 800 visitors who filled the hall. Some were about his beret (“Do you always wear the same one?”), but most were about his biggest challenges and technological breakthroughs.

The American also took the time to catch up on events with UT administrators, and with ‘Robot Prof.’ Stefano Stramigioli, who was the supervisor for his honorary doctorate.
His programme also included a ‘Meet & Greet’ with the Pre-U partner schools, a mini open house at the DesignLab, a tour of the Robotlab, a tour of the Experimental Centre for Technical Medicine (ECTM), and a lecture for Creative Technology (CreaTe) students in the Smart Experience laboratory (SmartXp). Jamie Hyneman concluded his visit to the UT by taking a look at Green Team Twente’s workshop, where he also spoke to the representatives of various national media.
