How to compose your Master's

What your study programme will look like exactly, depends on the choices you make in composing your Master’s. There are three steps in doing so: 

  • Step 1 Choose a specialisation

    At the start of the programme, during the first quartile, you need to choose a specialisation. If you need to follow the Pre-Master’s before entering this Master’s, you will choose your specialisation in advance, when applying for the programme. In that case, you mention your choice of specialisation in your application letter. The Master’s in Industrial Engineering & Management (IEM) has three specialisations:  

    Financial Engineering & Management (FEM) 

    In this specialisation, you will acquire the mathematical and managerial knowledge needed to fulfil your ambitions in the field of banking, insurance, pensions and more. 

    Healthcare Technology & Management (HCTM) 

    What are the newest developments in healthcare technology and how can you optimise healthcare processes? This specialisation highlights the role of management in healthcare. 

    Production & Logistic Management (PLM) 

    This specialisation focuses on the design, planning, optimisation and control of operational processes in production, transportation, supply chains and sustainability and service logistics.

  • Step 2 Choose a research orientation

    Alongside your specialisation, you need to decide on a research orientation. An orientation represents a scientific research area and determines a part of the mandatory courses you are going to follow and the field in which you complete your master’s thesis.

    Which orientation you can opt for, depends on the specialisation you choose. Some specialisations only have one research orientation (FEM, HCTM), whereas another specialisation has more (PLM). Within the PLM-specialisation, you choose the orientation during the first quartile of the Master’s.  

  • Step 3 Select electives

    Next to some mandatory courses (which partly depend on your chosen specialisation), there is a lot of elective space. You choose elective courses that are related to your research orientation (15 EC) as well as other relevant courses. You can follow these at the University of Twente as well as other universities in the Netherlands or even abroad. 

    Adding a second specialisation  

    You can choose these electives freely, but you can also add a second specialisation: a specified package of courses worth 30 EC. You can choose one of the other two specialisations within the Master’s in IEM, but we also offer additional specialisations with courses of other (engineering) Master’s at UT. This way, you take maximum profit from the cross-disciplinary approach of UT, helping you become a professional with in-depth knowledge and skills in various disciplines.

Master's structure

During your Master's in Industrial Engineering & Management, you will collect a total of 120 EC within two years. In addition to two compulsory courses of the Master's, you will follow additional courses within the specialisation of your choice.

European Credit Transfer System

Student workload at Dutch universities is expressed in EC, also named ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System), which is widely used throughout the European Union. In the Netherlands, each credit represents 28 hours of work.

Below, you can find the general structure of the Master’s, it serves as an example of what your curriculum might look like. Which exact courses you will follow at what moment, depends on the choices you make, as well as the starting date of your Master’s.

You have a lot of freedom to compose your own study programme. Studying abroad is an attractive and encouraging option during the first part of your second year. 

Master’s thesis

35 EC

The master’s thesis (30EC) is commissioned by a company. During a 5EC course (Thesis Preparation) you prepare the assignment and write a research proposal. The last 20 weeks of your study you execute the research at the company and you write your thesis.
