Application fee

Start your application for a master's

A number of our master's programmes require you to pay an application fee when you apply.

All students with an EEA or non-EEA nationality holding a non-Dutch higher educational degree have to pay an application fee of €100,- for each application to a master’s programme that requires the payment of the fee. This means that your application will only be reviewed once the application fee has been paid and the money has been received by the University of Twente.

FAQ

  • When am I exempted from paying the application fee?

Under the following conditions, students are exempt from paying the application fee:

    • You are not applying for one of the master’s programmes which are mentioned by the question ‘For which programmes do I have to pay an application fee?’.
    • Students who have completed their bachelor’s and/or master’s degree in the Netherlands, regardless of nationality.
    • Double Degree students from:
      • Double Degree European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT): Cyber Security, Human Computer Interaction and Design, Data Science, Digital Manufacturing.
      • Double Degree Universität Münster
      • Double Degree Mechanical Engineering & Aeronautics at Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica (ITA)
    • Collaborations according to the 3+2 construction with Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU), University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham (AMRITA).
    • Dutch recognised refugee students. Dutch recognised refugees need to apply via Studielink using their DigiD. Admissions will check your personal details registered in the municipality database. Only the students with code 26 or code 27 are recognised refugees in the Netherlands and will be exempt.
    • Students who were admitted and want to defer (as well as those who choose another specialisation) can apply for the next intake if they have already paid the application fee for the same programme previously. Please see the question "I already applied last year and deferred my application. Do I still have to pay?", as there is an expiration date to it.
    • Students who are transferring within the University of Twente from one EEMCS / ET programme to another EEMCS / ET programme. These students have already paid the application fee and are enrolled before they transfer to another programme.
    • Students who are already enrolled and studying in an EEMCS / ET programme and want to apply for a second EEMCS / ET programme.
    • Students who are already enrolled and studying in another programme at the University of Twente and want to apply for an EEMCS / ET programme in addition to their original programme.
    • Students who are coming for an Exchange (Course Abroad/Placement) programme. The application fee is not applicable for exchange students/placement students. However, if you choose to continue with a master's degree after your exchange period, you are obligated to pay the application fee unless it is part of a collaboration according to the 3+2 construction.
  • Why do I need to pay an application fee?

The faculty of EEMCS and the faculty of ET want to make sure they can dedicate sufficient time to each individual applicant and be able to handle the applications swiftly; making sure that each student receives a response as soon as possible about their admission. In recent years, the number of applications has grown significantly, making it difficult for the faculty to review each application within a reasonable time frame. Through the introduction of the application fee, the University of Twente wants to encourage students who are serious about wanting to study at the University of Twente to apply to the programme of their choice. This way, the University of Twente safeguards the speed of response for those students who have decided to study at the University of Twente.

The University of Twente will not review your application documents before you have submitted your application, and you have to pay the application fee in order to submit your application.

  • I already applied last year and deferred my application. Do I still have to pay?

The application fee will be valid for two academic intake years according to the admission decision, and this includes the academic year of the first admittance. Therefore, students who defer (as well as those who choose another specialisation) and apply for the next intake (deferral) do not have to pay the fee again.

  • I applied for multiple programmes, a double degree or a joint degree. Do I have to pay the application fee?

You can apply for as many programmes at the University of Twente as you want. However, you have to pay an application fee of €100-, for each application to a master’s programme that requires the payment of the fee. Please note, your application will only be reviewed once UT has received the application fee.

Please refer to the exemptions list by the question ‘When am I exempted from paying the application fee?’, to find out which double degree programmes, joint degree programmes and other collaborations are exempted.

  • How can I pay?

When signing up in Osiris, you will see information regarding the application fee in the application form. You can use a Credit card, PayPal, iDEAL or bank transfer. You will receive all the bank details once you fill in your application in Osiris.

If you cannot pay right now, e.g., you will get a scholarship, and you do not have the money to pay the fee, you cannot be exempted from paying the application fee if none of the listed exemptions applies to you. Please note, that your application will only be reviewed once the University of Twente has received the application fee/money.

  • When do I pay (at which point in the process)?

The application fee has to be paid in advance according to the application deadline that applies to you. The University of Twente will only process your application if the payment has reached the University of Twente’s bank account before the application deadline.

Please take into account the transfer processing times from your bank to the Netherlands. Depending on the country of origin, this may take a couple of days. Please be aware that your application cannot be considered if the application fee is received after the application deadline.

  • What if I did not receive the official invoice after paying?

The system for the application fee is arranged by an external organization. Therefore, the University of Twente does not have any access or insight into the payment information.

If you have not received your invoice after paying, please contact https://www.aanmelder.nl/en/contact/

Please note, if you have not mentioned your transaction code making the wire transfer, also contact aanmelder.nl stating your transaction code. They are able to connect your transaction to you and the payment will be finalized. After that, you will receive the official invoice.

  • Do I get the application fee refund?

An adjustment regarding the refund of the application fee has been made. Please see further information below based on your first application intake.

    • From September 2023 intake and onwards

For students who are applying for the September intake 2023 and onwards, the application fee will not be refunded.

This means that the application fee will not be refunded if you:

      • Have paid the fee, and you do not submit a complete application with all of the required documents in Osiris before the application deadline.
      • Have submitted your application via the Osiris system before the application deadline, but paid the application fee after the application deadline.
      • Have paid the application fee, however, payment was made for the incorrect intake semester.
      • Get a rejection letter from the specific master's programme.
      • Wanted to start the programme after you got a positive decision upon submitted a complete application, but you are unable to attend due to personal circumstances. Please check the question: "I already applied last year and deferred my application. Do I still have to pay?".

Please keep in mind our application deadline, before making the payment for the application fee. Since the payment system of the application fee will also not be closed after the deadline and the University of Twente has two intake semesters, therefore make sure to also choose the correct semester you have intended.

    • Until February 2023 intake

You will only get a refund when you are officially enrolled at our university and start your study here. This fee will be refunded if you are applying for the programme(s) at the latest on the February 2023 intake or have already applied for an earlier intake and defer your application within two years. Please check our FAQ regarding the difference between an application and enrolment.

You are not eligible for a refund if you:

      • Have paid the fee, and you do not submit a complete application with all of the required documents in Osiris before the application deadline.
      • Have submitted your application before the application deadline but paid the application fee after the application deadline.
      • Get a rejection letter from the programme.
      • Wanted to start the programme, but you are unable to attend due to personal circumstances. However, the admission will be valid for a period of two academic years (including the academic year of first admittance), and you can defer your application to the next intake moment.

Students who enrol for the September intake; processing the refund will begin in October, at the latest. Students who enrol for the February intake: processing the refund will begin in March, at the latest.

However, the timing of the payment will also depend on your bank and country. Please be patient, as it can take a while.

      Amount of the refund

The amount you receive as a refund may be less than the entire application fee, including bank transfer costs. This will depend on your bank, especially if you are located outside the EEA. This is the case when you pay the application fee as well as receive back the application fee (refund).

      Time of the refund

Please be aware that the refunding procedure starts in October for the September intake and March for the February intake. It might take some time to process. If it has been longer than 12 weeks since you have started the programme, and you haven’t received a refund yet, please contact Student Services.

Please note: the application fee will not be deducted from your tuition fees. The fee has to be paid before submitting the complete application. It is not linked to the tuition fee payment, and it will be refunded after you are officially enrolled at the University of Twente. This fee will be refunded only if you are applying for the programme(s) at the latest on the February 2023 intake or have already applied for an earlier intake and defer your application within two years.

  • Can I pay the fee even if I do not have all documents for the application yet (e.g., English certificate)?

It is possible to pay the fee if you do not have all the documents for the application yet. However, please be aware that the University of Twente needs all the required documents in order to handle and process your application.

Therefore, kindly make sure to submit all the required documents before the application deadline. If this cannot be fulfilled before the application deadline, the University of Twente will not be able to proceed the application, as it is incomplete, and the payment made for the application fee will not be refunded.
