Advanced Technology is a technical Bachelor’s programme. Without mathematics at the highest level in your secondary school programme, you will not be able to solve the problems you encounter during your studies. It is therefore a substantial part of the programme. Like any other science and engineering programme, in the first year at least 20% of the programme is devoted to mathematics. 

You will gain direct admission to the Bachelor’s programme in Advanced Technology if you have a Dutch VWO diploma with a Natuur & Techniek profile. With a Natuur & Gezondheid programme you need Wiskunde B and Natuurkunde in order to enter the programme.

Students from outside the Netherlands should have a pre-university secondary education comparable to the Dutch VWO diploma, with as equivalent high passing grades in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry as required subjects. The Dutch VWO diploma includes English and therefore from prospective students an English equivalent is expected. As the programme is taught entirely in English, a high level of English proficiency (CEFR, B2/C1 level; minimum IELTS score of 6.0, or equivalent) is also required. Are you an international student and is your secondary education not comparable to the Dutch VWO diploma? However, you would like to take Advanced Technology? The University of Twente and the Holland International Study Center offer you the possibility to take a preparation year after which you will be admissible to Advanced Technology. If the deficiency in Physics or Chemistry is small an admission on individual basis can be considered.

In March and November, the University of Twente organizes its Bachelor’s Open Days. At these events, staff and students of the Advanced Technology programme are on hand to answer all your questions. Be sure to register in advance on the Bachelor’s Open Days web page. Another good option would be to participate in our student-for-a-day programme, which enables you to team up with a first-year student and experience life at Twente for yourself. You will also have the opportunity to speak to our study adviser.

A four-year programme at a university of applied sciences leads to a Bachelor’s or professional studies degree and is an applied, vocational programme with few or no opportunities to engage in fundamental research. The emphasis on research is to be found in university programmes, where you will often be taught by researchers. This does not mean that everyone at a university is trained for a career in research – a university programme can also train you to become a designer, organizer or entrepreneur – but academic knowledge and research skills will always be part of your basic education. University Bachelor’s programmes take three years to complete and most Bachelor’s graduates opt to continue their studies for one or two more years in order to specialize and obtain a Master’s degree. The University of Twente is a research university, and not a university of applied sciences.

The matching procedure is usually intended for students who gain admission to the university directly from Dutch secondary education. It helps them become better acquainted with the Bachelor’s programme they want to take and make sure that it is the right option for them. However, Advanced Technology also chooses to give international students the opportunity to participate in the matching procedure. If you enrol for the Advanced Technology programme, you will be sent a questionnaire which you are required to complete and return to the study adviser. Find out more on our matching webpage.

Unfortunately, the University of Twente does not offer any scholarships for Bachelor’s programmes. However, some students of Advanced Technology at the University of Twente have secured scholarships in their home countries. Also for Dutch students scholarships can be available.

Here's an indication of your cost of living as a student at the University of Twente.

For many courses and practicals, you will be expected to bring your own laptop. You will need a laptop to work on projects with your fellow students and to perform calculations during practicals. The University of Twente offers you the opportunity to buy a laptop at the Notebook Service Centre. Please check this website regularly for more information. Of course, you are welcome to use your own laptop. Please note: For Advanced Technology you will need a laptop comparable to the “high-end” laptop offered by the University of Twente.

Advanced Technology is a full-time technical Bachelor’s programme. Besides having a lot of contact hours you will have to study at home to keep up with your various subjects. The University of Twente attaches a great deal of importance to providing good student support during your Bachelor’s programme. In your first year, you will have at least two meetings with one of our study advisers. The study adviser can help you with any problems you might have.

Advanced Technology is a Bachelor’s programme and most of our students go on to take a Master’s programme. A Bachelor’s degree in Advanced Technology gives you access to a wide range of Master’s programmes all over the world. What kind of job you will have and how much you will earn depends on which Master's programme you choose.

You can meet up with other international students by joining one of our international student associations. The University of Twente is home to many different international student associations, which are listed on our student associations web page.

A study association is an association especially for the students who take a particular Bachelor’s or Master’s programme, run by students from the programme. Astatine is the study association for the Advanced Technology Bachelor’s programme at the University of Twente. Its name comes from the element Astatine, the abbreviation for which (At) corresponds with the abbreviation for Advanced Technology (AT). The association currently has over 300 members, many of whom are actively involved. Astatine supports students in a variety of ways, including education-related activities, career orientation and opportunities to socialize. Find out more on the Astatine website.

Advanced Technology is an English-taught Bachelor’s programme. To be admitted to the programme you do not have to speak Dutch. However, learning a little Dutch could be useful while you are living in the Netherlands. There are a number of ways to learn Dutch during your stay here. Enschede is a student city, offering a range of student housing both on and off the University of Twente campus. In general, student accommodation is relatively easy to find, but with lots of students looking for a place to live at the start of term, we recommend that you start looking early.

As the programme is taught entirely in English, you will need a high level of English proficiency (CEFR, B2/C1 level; minimum IELTS score of 6.0, or equivalent). No, you are not admissible to the Advanced Technology programme with only an HBO propedeuse. Mathematics B at VWO or equivalent is required. Consult the Admission Office website for more information.
