Life after ATLAS Anne Sietsma

Have you ever wondered what students do after their time at the University College Twente? So did we until June 2016, when the first students graduated from the ATLAS program. Anne is also a graduate and is currently studying the Joint Master in Sustainable Development. This is a two-year program that requires you to take interdisciplinary courses in at least two different universities, sounds perfect for an ATLAS graduate, right? Anne will tell you more.

“I started my Master’s in Graz (Austria) and now I am studying in Venice. Next semester I will probably go to Basel; I really get to explore Europe in this way. The program itself integrates both political and engineering/physics subjects and is therefore very broad. I chose to enrol because I truly believe that sustainable development is the most important challenge faced by the world today. I would like to add to the solution, but I am not sure how.

Take all the space given to you to explore and find out what makes you tick

Within ATLAS, I had focused my graduation project on a sustainability subject and combined with some of the semester projects this has proven an excellent preparation. So good in fact that the first semester of my master’s program was for a large part repetition; useful to get the whole class to a similar level, but not so useful for me personally. Luckily there were plenty of opportunities to take extra courses, so I broadened the scope a bit, taking on a course in philosophy of climate change and one in American politics.

Here in Venice, the courses are more specific and challenging. The focus now is on natural science and physics subjects and next semester I hope to go deeper into political and philosophical aspects of sustainability. In the end, I want to combine both topics in my thesis and of course later in life. I think this is actually what ATLAS has taught me; combining perspectives.

I would like to give the current and future ATLAS students the advice to take all the space given to you to explore and find out what makes you tick. Think about what you have done and what makes you proud. Choosing a master’s program after ATLAS is just one step, so you should find your direction rather than your destination.”
