What your students may ask

  • What is the difference between a research university and a university of applied sciences in the Netherlands?

Research-oriented education is traditionally offered by research universities, such as the University of Twente. The programmes at research universities focus on theoretical aspects of the field of study and prepare students for undertaking independent research. These lead to a so-called WO bachelor’s or WO master’s degree. It is also possible to pursue a PhD degree at a research university.

The programmes at universities of applied sciences prepare students for particular professions and tend to be more practically oriented. They lead to either a so-called HBO bachelor’s or HBO master’s degree.

  • What is there to do in Enschede?

The city of Enschede is the largest city in the East of the Netherlands with a population of around 158 000 - one third of whom are students. The city boasts colourful weekly markets, bustling shoppings streets and well-tended parks - in fact, it is one of the greenest cities in the Netherlands, with a 52-kilometre walking and cycling route.

Its student population gives the city its flair: it is a very multicultural environment (30 000 students divided over three higher education institution). Every day, you will see students cycling to their classes, reading on the banks of Rutbeek Lake or having fun in the Old Market pubs.

There are cool events to enjoy all year round, such as Freshtival at Rutbeek Park, the superhip Gogbot and, of course, the big King's Day Festival.

Finally: do not forget that we are 2 hours by train from Amsterdam and 1 hour from Münster in Germany. Nothing is far away!

  • What are the tuition fees?

For 2024/2025, Bachelor tuition fees per year are:

    13084 euros

  • Where do I live?

Finding accommodation in the Netherlands can be a huge challenge. However, our students are lucky: finding housing in Enschede is cheaper and easier than in other Dutch student cities!

At the University of Twente, we have our full-service campus so students can live either on or off campus, in the city of Enschede. The city of Hengelo (5 kilometres from UT) is also a good option!

In any case, our student housing service is there to help!

  • How much should I plan to live in Enschede?

The total cost of living is around €12.000,- per year, excluding tuition fees. This information is meant as an indication of an average student annual budget. For more information, click here.

  • What kind of support is available to students?

First of all, every student has a study advisor who will follow and advise them throughout their studies at UT. They can be their first person of contact. We also have career services, doctors and psychologists, student counselors, student associations and many other services just for our students. To have an overview, click here.

    Webiste for the deadlines

  • How do I apply?

All applications go through one website: Studielink.

Students need to create an account and follow the steps!

  • What can I do to facilitate the admission process?

Students need to submit their application as soon as possible. They can apply and provide their certificates at a later date. The sooner they submit their application, the sooner they'll get a response from the admissions office and the sooner they'll be able to decide/adapt/change/make the best decisions with all the information at hand.

If you are in an IB school, make sure that your students share their results online via the portal. It saves them time and allows the process of admission to go a bit faster.
