Career perspectives

Get support in choosing a master's

As a graduate of the Master’s in Sustainable Energy Technology, you can find yourself working in every phase of the energy transition, from research and development to implementation, or you could start a career in consultancy. You can also start up your own business. Or you can opt to further develop yourself by following an EngD or PhD programme

Type of degree

When you have completed this Master’s, you will receive a Master’s degree in Sustainable Energy Technology. Also, you can title yourself Master of Science (MSc) or use the Dutch title Ingenieur (Ir.).

Job opportunities

Thanks to the broad scope of this Master’s, you will become a broadly equipped energy authority combining technological expertise with a solid, hands-on understanding of economics, policy and innovation. With these qualities, you will be in high demand on the job market, in which sustainability is an increasingly important topic.

UT alumni with a Master’s degree in Sustainable Energy Technology work in various positions and organisations. For example:
  • Energy Storage Researcher at Shell
  • Project Engineer Sustainable Energy at Witteveen+Bos
  • Consultant Corporate Sustainability at ENGIE
  • Electric Vehicle Market Analyst at Total

You can deploy your expertise in many different types of challenging and meaningful jobs, whether you want to focus on research, development, implementation or consultancy. You could, for example, start a career as an energy engineer, project engineer, energy trader, energy analyst, or sustainability consultant, to name just a few of the many options. You can fulfil these jobs at any kind of national or international company within the energy or sustainability arena, for example, an energy or oil company or an engineering or consultancy agency.

Roughly speaking, you can either help ‘grey’ businesses go green, enabling them to successfully implement renewable energy solutions, or you can launch a career with green incubators, companies that are dedicated to the realisation of sustainable energy technology from the start. Examples of companies you could work for include Shell, Esso, Stork, Total, Veolia, VDL Energy Systems, Mecal, Ampera, Pure Energie, and the list goes on.

Start a business

Do you have a great business idea? At the University of Twente, you can turn it into reality! At UT, we highly encourage entrepreneurship. In fact, UT has been voted the most entrepreneurial university in the Netherlands four times in a row. We have a unique approach of putting scientific knowledge to practical use and turning our expertise and yours into solutions that people and society actually need. As a catalyst for meaningful entrepreneurship, we offer you the Novel-T foundation and the start-up hub on campus.

Continue as a researcher: Obtain a PhD

Instead of pursuing a professional career right away after obtaining your Master’s degree, you can opt to follow a PhD programme as facilitated by Twente Graduate School. This involves spending four years studying a particular research area in-depth in one of our research chairs. Obtaining your PhD will earn you the title of Doctor (Dr.).

Follow an EngD programme

For excellent professionals and graduates with a Master’s degree from a university, TGS offers five different Engineering Doctorate (EngD) programmes. These two-year, tailored programmes are aimed at you becoming a high-level technological designer. The EngD programme most likely to match your interests as a Master’s in Sustainable Energy Technology would be Energy & Process Technology. On successfully completing the programme, you will receive a certified diploma and the academic degree title, Engineering Doctorate (EngD). Interested in doing an EngD? You can check below if there are any vacancies. If not, you can also send in an open application.
