  • Case project in Environmental Management

In your second semester, you will work on a case study project together with a group of your fellow students. This project reflects a real-life, relevant challenge in society, related to the broad theme of environmental management and sustainability. You and your teammates will come up with your own topic within this field, and develop a strategy and design a (potential) solution to this challenge. You can even connect to external clients, like a municipality, regional authorities or association(s), a local environmental entity, NGO, or a company, and present your solution there!

Examples of case study projects students took on:

    • Analysing waste reduction strategies for the Island of Vlieland, the Netherlands
    • Exploring promising circularity options for the agrifood sector in Friesland, the Netherlands.
    • Conducting a market and contextual analysis for a circular jeans brand
    • Social acceptance of green and blue infrastructures in the Vlietzone, Leeuwarden
  • Master's thesis in Environmental Management

You will complete MEEM by writing your master’s thesis. The choice of your thesis subject is largely up to you. You could come up with your own proposal, or you could connect with ongoing research within UT’s Section of Governance and Technology for Sustainability (CSTM), on topics such as environmental policy approaches, eco-innovations, corporate environmental strategy, circular economy studies, or market development, to name some examples.

In your master’s thesis, you could focus on subjects such as:
    • Study of the effects of ecotourism on forest conservation and rural development in Way Kambas National Park, Indonesia
    • Analysis of policy instruments to enable circularity in the food packaging industry
    • Evaluation of the socio-technical opportunities of the chemical recycling of tires
