Double degree with EIT Digital

The University of Twente is a core partner of EIT Digital, part of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology. The EIT Digital Master School offers an international Master’s programme focusing on ICT Innovation, combining and integrating technical majors with a fully standardized minor on Innovation and Entrepreneurship. As a student at the EIT Digital Master School, you will not only gain fundamental knowledge and skills on a technical topic, but also learn how to commercialize your innovative ideas.

Computer Science Double degree in Security & Privacy

The EIT Digital double degree programme in Security & Privacy offers cutting edge technical courses within the field of Cyber Security. You will study at two of Europe's foremost technical universities which will lead to a double degree upon completion. As part of the programme you will take tailored business courses in innovation and entrepreneurship.

The programme duration is two years. One of these years can be completed at the University of Twente. The other year has to be followed at one of the EIT Digital partner universities in either Italy, Germany or Hungary, depending on the specialization of your interest. Your final thesis will be well grounded in industrial problems.

Structure of the double degree Programme

The EIT Digital Master in Security & Privacy is a double degree programme where you will study at a university in one country in the first year - the entry year - and continue at a university in another country in the second year - the exit year. One of these two years can be carried out at the University of Twente. The other year will be carried out at one of the EIT Digital partner universities. The programme has an integrated technical content (Technical Master of Science in Cyber Security) and a business content (Innovation & Entrepreneurship minor). An integral part of the second year is a Master’s thesis consisting of 30 credits.

Students who follow one year of their EIT study programme at the University of Twente will choose their courses from the same list of courses as students following the 4TU specialization in Cyber Security.

Entry Year at the University of Twente

The first/entry year offers basic Cyber Security courses, such as an Introduction to Security and Cryptography, Internet Security, Software Security, System Security, Cyber Risk Management, and Privacy-Enhancing Technologies

The Innovation & Entrepreneurship (I&E) courses form an important part of the programme. The I&E basics course (offered in the first half of the first semester) provides an introduction to business and management. The Business Development Lab (offered in the second half of the first semester) extends media systems engineering projects by a market survey, a business model generation process, and a venture development exercise. We emphasize user driven innovation and holistic analysis of service, technology, organization and financial perspectives, as new technologies are disruptive for existing business models and almost always have a significant impact on the culture and social relations. Society-relevant themes also are at the core of the summer schools, which bring students from the different entry points together.

An overview of the courses can be found on the 4TU website.

EIT OFF-SITE SUMMER SCHOOL

A key component in EIT Digital Master School students’ innovation and entrepreneurship education is compulsory attendance at a two-week long summer school during the interval between the two academic years

EXIT YEAR AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TWENTE

If you are carrying out your exit year of your EIT Master's programme at the University of Twente, you will be specializing in Cyber Security. You are required to take 60 credits of dedicated Cyber Security courses in your exit year. Most importantly, 30 out of 60 credits will be used for your final Master's thesis. Another 10 credits will be used for the course in Research Topics, consisting of a 6 credits I&E minor thesis and a 4 credits state-of-the-art preparation for your Master's thesis.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Successful graduates will easily find positions in the product service sector (e.g. telecom companies), financial institutions or with software and hardware vendors that require a high level of assurance in their ICT systems.

Graduates of the Security & Privacy programme will also be in a good position to start their own company, provide product or technology development consulting, business development consulting or other consultancy services. Another career option is an advanced research career in industry or academia, including PhD research at the universities involved or at other leading institutions.

Last but not least, government security agencies lack a qualified pool of systems security engineers despite the reports of cyber-attacks and security breaches that have flooded the media in recent years. These agencies are on the lookout for new talent to help shore up their cyber security activities.

Typical job titles would be:

  • (Cyber) Security consultant
  • Security Analyst
  • (Information) Security Architect
  • Operation Manager
  • Product Manager
