Check the study choice calendar to find out what other ways there are to explore your future studies.

Find out if you are eligible and start the eligibility check.

Our eligibility check is designed to assist you as a student holding a non-Dutch diploma. It gives you an indication of your eligibility, i.e. your chances of being admitted to the master's programme in Applied Physics. The e-check takes about five minutes to complete. The outcome of the eligibility check is a personal advice to you. Please note that this is not the official admission procedure and that no rights can be derived from the outcome of the eligibility check.

You can find a detailed list of all the admission requirements below.

After finishing the first part (eligibility check) of the application process we'll send you further instructions by e-mail.

Admission requirements

  • Required diplomas or knowledge
    • Bachelor of Science in Applied Physics
    • Knowledge of the following topics: Calculus and Analysis, Linear Algebra, Integration, Differential Equations
  • Language skills

Success in your studies requires a high level of English proficiency. Therefore, prospective master's students with an international degree must meet the English language requirement. The application will only be processed when the English language requirements have been met, the University of Twente does not offer possible conditional admission if the English language requirement is not met.

Make sure you have obtained a valid English test result before the application deadline. If your application is accompanied by a language test score report with a test date after our application deadline, we will not process it. Therefore, make sure to do the test in advance, as it will take time for you to get the official certificate.

As proof that you meet this requirement, you will be asked in the application procedure to upload one of the requested language certificates below. Only these internationally recognised test results will be accepted. Without a valid certificate, your application cannot be processed.

    • TOEFL iBT (internet-based) certificate, not older than two years, with an overall score of 90, and a minimum score on each section of at least 21. Please note that the University of Twente does not accept the MyBest scores of the TOEFL test. By exception, you can also take the TOEFL iBT (Special) Home Edition test (only valid for the September 2024 and February 2025 intake). This is only the case when you cannot use a regular language test as listed in this table because the onsite language test centre is closed because of unsafe situations in your country.
    • Cambridge C1 Advanced, formerly known as; Cambridge English Advanced (CAE) from 2015 onwards (when the subscores were introduced). Obtained an A, B or C grade, with an overall score of at least 176 and a minimum score on each section of at least 169. The Cambridge online test is not accepted by the University of Twente.
    • Cambridge C2 Proficiency, formerly known as; Cambridge English Proficiency (CPE) from 2015 onwards (when the subscores were introduced). Obtained an A, B or C grade, with an overall score of at least 176 and a minimum score on each section of at least 169. The Cambridge online test is not accepted by the University of Twente.

    KEEP IN MIND

    • During your application, the University of Twente will verify your proof of English proficiency. The IELTS (academic) and TOEFL iBT are only accepted once it is not older than two years. Since your application will not be immediately reviewed, please kindly make sure that your English certificate is still valid for at least one month after you have submitted your application to Osiris. Please note: In some cases, it might take longer before your application is reviewed.
    • The language requirements when applying for a scholarship may be different because scholarship providers may have different requirements.
    • If you are a native English speaker and/or you have (fully) completed your education in English, you also have to meet the specific English language requirement.

    English language exemptions

Students might be exempted from providing the University of Twente with proof of English proficiency. You are exempted from the English language requirement if you hold:

    • A relevant bachelor’s degree and/or master's degree from an accredited academic institution in the Netherlands
    • You have English as an exam subject during your secondary education. This exemption depends on your country, please check our country list to make sure if you must do the additional English language test or not. Please note: not every master's programme allows this as an exemption. Please submit your application and your application will be reviewed whether or not an additional English language test is required.
    • You have physically attended and obtained a three-year bachelor’s degree in one of the countries exempted by the UT. When your awarding institution is in one of these countries, but your teaching institution is not, you are not exempted. The same rule applies to distance (online) education.

If some cases, you might receive a rejection of your application, please be aware this rejection is valid for both master's and pre-master's programmes.
