Your partner in educational innovation with ICT.
As the TELT team, we believe that meaningful innovation in education starts with the people who teach. That’s why we choose to work alongside educators to explore new ideas and help experiment with ICT that fits their practice. From the initial idea to long-term adoption, TELT is with you every step of the way.
Additionally, we represent the University of Twente in (inter)national projects and partnerships on educational innovation with ICT, and we actively monitor trends and developments in the EdTech landscape.
Our core activities include:
- Building expertise around emerging technologies.
- Experimenting with new technologies by facilitating innovative pilots.
- Assisting in implementing solutions that have proven effective.
- Sharing our expertise and the results of projects that we are involved in.
The TELT-team was established by the University of Twente in January 2016. We are a multi-disciplinary team with expertise in different themes that involve education and ICT. To help you in the best way we possibly can, we work closely together with different service departments and the e-learning specialists within your faculty.

- The Need: When TELT was established, examination was primarily paper-based. There was an urgent need for more efficient, secure, and modern digital testing methods to replace manual workflows.
- Our Approach: We collaborated with lecturers to research various approaches. After evaluating Bring-Your-Own-Device (BYOD) options, we opted for a centrally managed solution using Chromebooks and the assessment software Remindo. We launched a pilot in 2017 with 150 devices and hands-on support.
- The Outcome: Today, the UT provides a fully-fledged e-assessment service with over 650 Chromebooks across multiple locations. Supported by dedicated teams at the Exam Office and CES-IM, the service also includes solutions for software-based exams via virtual desktops.

- The Need: Fulya Kula, Assistant Professor at UT, wanted to provide students with real-time insights into their mathematics level and give teachers an overview of which topics required more classroom attention.
- Our Approach: We used H5P to collect student data and worked with educational designers to create a 'star-based' visualization system. This system encourages students without demotivating them, while teachers receive a dashboard that prioritizes topics based on student performance.
- The Outcome: After two years of iterative development, the visualizations are now used across eleven bachelor and pre-master programmes, successfully bridging the gap between student effort and teacher intervention.

- The Need: The existing in-house e-portfolio system had become obsolete and was no longer supported, failing to meet the evolving pedagogical needs of various faculties.
- Our Approach: We conducted a needs analysis across faculties and ran comparative pilots with two major platforms: PebblePad and Portflow. Based on user feedback and technical requirements, we advised the UT on the best fit for our specific educational context.
- The Outcome: The UT officially adopted Portflow. We facilitated the transition and contract establishment, ensuring a future-proof solution for student reflections and competency tracking.
- The Need: Following a successful experiment by UT Professor Srirang Manohar with a DIY lightboard, a survey confirmed a widespread desire among UT teachers for a professional facility to create engaging video lectures.
- Our Approach: We explored professional solutions and established a dedicated Lightboard studio. This facility allows educators to write and draw while maintaining direct eye contact with the camera, making complex explanations more dynamic.
- The Outcome: The Lightboard facility is fully operational and available for bookings. It has become a key tool for creating high-quality educational content.

- The Need: The Lifelong Learning (LLL) team required a specialized Learning Management System (LMS) to support non-subsidized and private education offerings for professionals.
- Our Approach: TELT conducted a deep-dive needs analysis by interviewing the three most experienced LLL teams at the UT. We mapped their requirements against leading LMS providers to identify a solution that supports flexible, professional education.
- The Outcome: We delivered a comprehensive requirement list and advisory report. This formed the foundation for the LLL project team to select and implement a system tailored to the needs of working professionals.
- The Need: To support flexible learning for professionals, TELT joined a national pilot to explore 'edubadges'. There was a need for a certified, quality-assured way to recognize small units of learning: micro-credentials.
- Our Approach: We helped establish a Quality Advisory Committee to ensure all UT micro-credentials meet national standards. We also developed the organizational structure for issuing regular and extra-curricular edubadges via the national platform.
- The Outcome: The UT now successfully issues various types of digital badges, enhancing the visibility and portability of student and professional achievements.

We support UT educators in exploring new ideas and experimenting with new ICT tools that fit their practice. Our approach is:
- Collaborative: You bring your teaching context; we bring expertise in tech, tools, and implementation at UT.
- Exploratory: Together, we investigate what works, for whom, and why.
- Empowering: We provide time, space, tools and guidance so you can learn by doing.
- Independent: We offer advice without a hidden agenda.
Try it → Test it → Tell it → Transfer it
- Try it: We start small, exploring an idea or a problem.
- Test it: Together, we find out what works in practice.
- Tell it: We share our findings and insights with the outside world. We believe that even flops come with great lessons.
- Transfer it: We explore opportunities for scaling up.
The Learning & Teaching Lab, a space managed by support staff from CELT and TELT, offers a variety of hardware for educators to explore, such as iPads, VR headsets, and podcasting equipment. For more details about the available equipment, please see the Learning & Teaching Lab’s FAQ ('Facilities and Rules').
