Horizon is a Service for offering Windows applications that run on a UT server.
Introduction
You can access the Horizon environment by using the web portal https://workspace.utwente.nl. During the first login to the Horizon environment, you can choose between access based on HTML or by using the VMware Horizon Client. If a client is available for your operating system, we advise you to install it. You can access these Windows applications from any device. Only the screen interaction takes place from the device.
General
- Description
Horizon offers an environment where Windows applications are made available to the end-user. Horizon uses HTML or a Horizon client, which means that the service delivers support for various OS platforms such as Windows/Linux/macOS/IOS/Android, etc.
With the help of Horizon, we can:
- Provide a secure work environment with enhanced security for Windows applications and databases.
- Easily offer Windows applications to Bring Your Own Devices (BYOD).
- Make Windows applications available to non-Windows systems.
- Directing the use of UT licensed software.
If a user starts an Windows application in Horizon, it is executed not on their system but on an underlying server environment in the UT data center. All processor, memory and disk-intensive tasks run on the server environment, and only the output, the application window, is displayed on the end user's system.

- Conditions
To be able to use Horizon, you must be a UT employee.
Windows applications can be included in our services if:
- The license requires the software to run on UT infrastructure.
- This benefits the security of the Windows application/database or data.
- Software is only available for Windows, and there is no reasonable alternative to the Windows application for other OS platforms.
- Support
Currently, the server environment is present in one data center. In the future, the hardware may be redundant in both data centers to increase availability.
Once a quarter, we plan regular maintenance during office hours. This maintenance is announced prematurely via a message when logging in and via the maintenance calendar.
Manuals
It is possible that you have installed an application locally which is also available in Horizon. When asked which application should be used to open a file, use the local application to prevent unnecessary load on the server environment.
You can click on the gear icon and select the sharing menu to access local files.
In this manual, you will often be required to perform actions. For these actions, a consistent style of writing has been used: references to text and buttons on screens are printed in italics, information that you have to enter yourself is printed in bold.
