The building blocks of the house style are the word mark, the universe made up of elements, the palette of colours, the divisions of the surfaces and the use of images.
The logo is available in a Dutch version and an English version. We prefer you to use the version with all of the words on one line. If the width of the space available for the logo is so limited that it would render it illegible, then we have an alternative version. We call this the stacked version. In principle, you should not use this version for University of Twente applications in house style. It is intended for applications in other environments and only if the preferred version cannot be used due to the limited space available.
When positioning the logo, take the following into account:
- that you ensure there is enough white space around the logo
- that the colour of logo (white or black) contrasts well with the background
- that the logo is positioned to the bottom right of a communication message
A wide range of shapes and elements, which we call the universe, distinguishes the style. The universe is made up of widely divergent connecting elements, inspired by the variety that characterizes the UT, in other words the campus and a broad spectrum of education, research and entrepreneurship.
The designer is free to determine the zoom level on the universe. This results is many options for using the elements in communications. The only parts of the University that have their own elements are the institutes, University College Twente and PRE-U. The schools, units and departments have the option of continually varying the elements they use.
The University of Twente's standard font is Linotype Univers. Within this typeface, Bold and Bold Condensed are used for headings. The typeface is a characteristic part of the University's visual identity. If Linotype Univers cannot be used, use the Arial font.
The main colours used in the house style are black and white. Additional base colours were selected for creating distinct profiles for the research institutes. A secondary palette of colours is used for titles and accentuation. In addition to being identified by an element, the research institutes are characterized by an additional base colour.
Surfaces are divided in different ways within the house style. Irrespective of the choice made regarding the division of surfaces, each publication should look light and airy: pages must not be completely filled.
The pre-defined division of surfaces for photographs, the element and text creates a clear identity for the University of Twente, offering plenty of variations for giving each communication its own individual look. The division of surfaces is integral to the visual identity of the University of Twente and through being uncluttered creates a distinctive feel.
The University of Twente's house style is distinguished by the palette of colours used, the uncluttered division of surfaces and the elements of the universe. In some communications, photographs can be important for conveying a powerful message. It is for this reason that the house style was further developed in 2015. Options for making more use of photographs in communication messages were added. There are now various defined options for adding images within the templates.
