This checklist will help you as a student who requires a visa or residence permit to get ready for your stay in the Netherlands and at UT.
Want to know how to make the most of your start at UT? Check out the Get Started Guide, which applies to all new and upcoming students at UT!
Especially for non-EEA students, we made a short checklist for you before and after arriving at UT. Check it out below!
What to arrange?
When arriving in the Netherlands, you can get to the University of Twente by different means and from different places of departure. Whichever way you arrive, don't forget to get a public transport card.
Upon arriving at Schiphol airport, make your way to Schiphol Plaza, the airports’ main entrance. Locate the NS ticket desk (open 24/7) and buy a one-way train ticket to Enschede. Take a train from Schiphol to Amersfoort, then another train from Amersfoort to Enschede. If you want to go to the university campus directly you have to get off in Enschede. From there you can either take bus #9 with direction 'Enschede CS' and alight at bus stop 'Kennispark/UT' or take bus #1 with direction 'Hengelo CS' and alight at bus stop 'UT/Hoofdingang'.
Our student Flory shows you how it's done:
If you're travelling from Eindhoven airport instead of Schiphol, view the video guide to find out how to get to Enschede.
From Enschede train station, either take bus #1 (direction 'Hengelo CS') and alight at bus stop 'UT/Hoofdingang' or bus #9 (direction 'Enschede CS') and alight at bus stop 'Kennispark/UT' (€ 1,50 - € 3,-).
Student Mobility Card
Student Mobility provides international students with easy access to all forms of transport in the Netherlands. With a Student Mobility Card you are able to receive a customised public transport card (OV-Chipkaart) with special discounts for international students. You can use this card for trains, trams, metro and buses. The Student Mobility Card offers an optional subscription to get a 15% discount on all trains on the Dutch Railways (NS). If you order in advance, you will be able to collect your card at the Onboarding Market during the Kick-In introduction week, or have the card posted.
OV-Chipkaart
To buy a public transport card directly from the Dutch Railways (NS), visit Apply for a personal OV-Chipcard.
TRAVEL TIP: USE THE APP '9292'
To plan your journey from other locations you can use the 9292-website.
Travel tipUse Google to find a cheap train ticket. If you are travelling with a group, an off-peak group ticket ("groepsticket dal uren") may be the cheaper option.
Kick-In is the University's introduction for all new UT students. During the Kick-In, you are, as an international student, able to attend a Facility Market where you will find out about many facilities, services and student associations UT has to offer.
Formality Appointments
UT will help you to arrange formalities such as collecting your residence permit, registration with the municipality of Enschede and undergoing a TB test for selected nationalities. If you are an international student and you have been accepted by UT you will be invited to attend the formality appointments. Please note that attendance at the appointments is mandatory for all international students. Not attending your appointments will delay the completion of formalities needed to properly start your studies.
Student Services gives you an overview of all the important information for current students such as the UT educational systems, study programme websites, news and events, IT facilities, well-being, etc.
