Career perspectives

Master Open Day on 20 November

As a graduate of the Master’s in Civil Engineering & Management (CEM) with a specialisation in Construction Management & Engineering, you can look forward to great career opportunities. You will be perfectly prepared for a role as a project manager, engineer, or consultant within the construction industry. You can also start up your own business. Or you can opt to further develop yourself by following a PhD- or EngD programme.

Type of degree

When you have completed this Master’s with the specialisation in Construction Management & Engineering, you will receive a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering & Management. Also, you can title yourself Master of Science (MSc) or use the Dutch title Ingenieur (Ir.). Your specialisation will be mentioned specifically on your diploma supplement, highlighting your specialised knowledge and skills in the field of construction management and engineering.

Job opportunities

The demand for skilled managers within the construction industry is high, and still on the rise, both nationally and internationally. Many companies, from contractors, engineering or consultancy firms to governmental institutions, are in great need of professionals who can combine technical know-how with management skills. As a graduate with a specialisation in Construction Management & Engineering, you can look forward to great career opportunities.

Depending on your interests and ambitions, there are a lot of different types of jobs you could fulfil. You could become a project or process manager in construction, leading complex projects as a project manager, process coordinator, change manager or systems engineer, working with contractors, engineering firms or public authorities to manage planning, execution and stakeholder coordination. Alternatively, you might pursue a career as a consultant or technical specialist, advising organisations on topics like asset management, circular construction, tendering or Building Information Modelling (BIM), helping clients navigate challenges such as digitisation, sustainability and supply chain complexity with strategic and data-driven solutions. Whichever role you want to fulfil, after completing this specialisation, you will be able to find a job across the full spectrum of the building and construction industry. You might also opt for a career as a researcher or technological designer, pursuing a PhD or EngD, preparing you for a role in academia, applied research or high-level design within the industry.

UT alumni with this specialisation currently work in various positions and organisations, for example:
  • Project coordinator at Rijkswaterstaat (the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management)
  • Data analyst/scientist at Boskalis
  • Project Engineer System Integration at Witteveen + Bos
  • Project manager Integrated Area Development at the Province of Utrecht

Graduates of this specialisation went on to fulfil interesting and highly varied jobs. They currently work as, for example, project leaders, process coordinators, asset managers, technical consultants, BIM engineers, construction supervisors, tender managers, systems engineers, and contract managers. They fulfil these roles at all kinds of companies, from contractors to engineering consultancies to public or governmental organisations.

Post-master opportunities

Instead of pursuing a professional career right away after obtaining your Master’s degree, you can opt for a more academically oriented career, by pursuing a PhD or EngD. An EngD programme is more practically oriented, aligned with the direct problem-solving or design needs of the industry, whereas a PhD programme is more focused on research. You can follow both types of programmes at the Twente Graduate School (TGS).

CONTINUE AS A RESEARCHER: OBTAIN A PHD

A PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) involves spending four years of in-depth studying and researching in a particular area. You can do this within one of our research groups or in one of our structured PhD programmes. An integral part of a PhD is writing your PhD thesis at the end and then presenting and defending your research in public. Obtaining your PhD earns you the title of Doctor (Dr).

FOLLOW AN ENGD PROGRAMME

Other than obtaining a PhD, you can also opt to follow an EngD programme after graduation. Such a programme usually takes two years and is aimed at you becoming a high-level technological designer. Upon successful completion, you will receive a certified diploma and the academic degree Engineering Doctorate (EngD).
