After your internship you will work on a Master’s assignment in the field of Data Science. The choice of your specific graduation subject will be largely up to you. For example, you may want to contribute to the formulation of theories around a specific theme concerning big data, or look for an algorithm or mathematical model that can help you answer your research question. Should the required algorithm or model not be readily available, you may want to consider developing it yourself.

Your Master's assignment could involve investigating questions such as:

  • Can supermarkets reduce waste by better estimating the demand for fresh products?
  • How do you optimize your impact on Twitter?
  • Can you have EEGs analyzed by a computer in order to improve the diagnosis of epilepsy?

Research groups

Research and education concerning this specialization are concentrated in the Data Science research group. This group consists of mathematicians, computer scientists, and electrical engineers, while also intersecting with virtually all other Applied Mathematics research groups. At the start of the Master’s programme, you will choose a research group to work in as a junior researcher. From this research group a mentor will be assigned to you to guide you through important decisions such as compiling the perfect set of courses and choosing the best type of internship.
